ABOUT
Porton Science Park (PSP) brings an exciting new 10 hectares of development to augment the established Porton Down Science Campus in south Wiltshire which is also home to the Ministry of Defence’s Defence and Science Technology Laboratory (Dstl), Public Health England (PHE) Porton and Porton Biopharma Ltd.
PSP provides an ideal location for companies working in Life Sciences and in Defence and Security technology sectors thanks to its strong links and close proximity to Dstl which is long established for innovation and expertise in defence science, engineering and cybertech, and to those companies in the health and life sciences sector by benefiting from the existing world class experience and expertise in the control of infectious disease, vaccinology and vaccine production facilities based at Porton Down and in the wider Wessex area.
Porton Science Park (PSP) is an ideal location for companies working in the defence and security technologies, with close proximity to the Defence Science Technology Laboratory (Dstl)’s established expertise in defence science, engineering and cybertech, and to those companies based in the health and life sciences sector by benefiting from the existing world class expertise in the control of infectious disease, vaccinology and vaccine production facilities based at Porton and in the wider Wessex area.
Phase one of the PSP includes brand new incubation and grow-on space totalling 3,950m2. Further development at the 10ha science park is strongly supported by the council, and provides for larger developments for established companies seeking direct association with the Porton scientific community.
The vision for PSP is to become a focus for innovation and market growth in its target sectors, through the provision of specialist services delivered in partnership with stakeholder organisations. A fully funded three year programme establishes a Health and Life Sciences Hub across the Swindon and Wiltshire area, based out of the PSP. Porton Science Park will support start-up business with:
• Dedicated business and venture management support, mentoring and advice
• Dissemination of knowledge and experience, with access to industry specialists
• Sector specific innovation support
• Networking and training opportunities
• Access to funding.
The Incubation Centre has been created with our tenants in mind. Specialist services will include access to specialist equipment, technical expertise, collaborative research between businesses and the research community, and active linkages with existing innovation networks, higher education, and knowledge based industries, knowledge transfer networks and national and international knowledge bases.
The building has been designed to achieve the highest possible energy efficiency and sustainability ratings. The Science Incubator has also been specified for a gigabit internet gateway for future occupiers.
The first phase of development at Porton Science Park has been funded by Wiltshire Council, the Local Growth Fund via the Swindon and Wiltshire Local Enterprise Partnership, and European Regional Development Funding via the European Structural and Investment Fund. Wiltshire Council is working closely with Public Health England (PHE) and Dstl as stakeholder partners on future growth of the Science Park.
PHE is in transition with a campus programme that will see significant elements of its science base relocate to Harlow in Essex by 2024. PHE will retain a presence on the Porton campus in the form of its regional Food, Water and Environment laboratory and a Cancer Registry, currently located in West Dean.
The biologic drug and vaccine manufacturing operations of PHE have been transferred to a company wholly owned by the Department of Health, Porton Biopharma Ltd (PBL); and this will continue to operate from the current PHE site for the foreseeable future.
