The term Science Park traditionally describes a business support environment that encourages and supports the start-up, incubation and development of innovation-led, high-growth, knowledge-based businesses; initiatives called by other names such as Research Park, Innovation Centre, Technology Park, Technopole or technology-based Incubator – where they aspire to meet the essential criteria set out above are also included within the definition.

However, the knowledge economy is changing and UKSPA members now include innovation districts, accelerator programmes as well as the long established models of science parks and research campuses.

Full Membership is for those organisations which are fully operational, having a site, buildings, occupiers and which deliver added value through an on-site management function that delivers advice and support to their knowledge intensive businesses.

Associate Membership is the membership category applicable to Innovation-based Parks and Technology-based Incubators which are being planned and where the developers intend to work towards the Association’s definition of a Full Member.

An additional category is that of Affiliate Membership, reserved for organisations and businesses whose objectives and activities have common ground with those of the Association and where membership would be mutually beneficial.
