The Babraham Research Campus is delighted to confirm BioMed Realty’s support for its Accelerate@Babraham bio-incubator programme. BioMed Realty, a Blackstone portfolio company and leading provider of real estate solutions to the life science and technology industries, will provide a financial contribution to cover a portion of the operational and lab costs for the Accelerate@Babraham bio-incubator programme. The programme re-launches this year with applications being invited from Tuesday 24th January.
One of the first accelerator programmes in the UK, Accelerate@Babraham was founded out of a desire to support early-stage ventures and creates a step change in access to the world leading Cambridge life science cluster. Drawing on year on year experience and lessons learned, Accelerate@Babraham brings together a network of experts, mentors and investors to equip early career science entrepreneurs with the skills, confidence, connections, and access to communal laboratories to start up, test and build their business propositions.
BioMed Realty joins a core group of strategic partners who work alongside supporters – One Nucleus, Taylor Vinters, RxCelerate, Silicon Valley Bank, and the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council – to enable the delivery of the ground-breaking programme. Their collective expertise, knowledge and connections open doors for start-ups that would not ordinarily be possible, by offering strategic guidance and support to help advance scientific discoveries.
Dr Kathryn Chapman, Science & Entrepreneurship Director, Babraham Research Campus Ltd, said: “We are thrilled that BioMed Realty will be involved in the 2023 Accelerate@Babraham programme. As well as dedicating time, resources, and funds to encourage the next generation of life science start-ups, BioMed Realty’s support as a strategic partner demonstrates its continued long-term commitment to nurturing life science ideas across the cluster.”
To date, Accelerate@Babraham companies have raised £46.1m and the current portfolio value is over £90m. Accelerate@Babraham 2023 will boost the next generation of life science innovators and help them navigate this tough and fast-moving sector while enabling tangible successes with their science.
Orestis Tzortzoglou, Vice President, Development, UK Market, BioMed Realty, said: “We are excited to become an official partner of this inspiring programme. The new partnership builds on our existing presence and strong relationship with the team at Babraham Research Campus and the Campus occupiers.
“Our ultimate goal is to help grow the Cambridge market, the life sciences industry and related employment opportunities in the UK through the provision of sustainable buildings and the cultivation of new talent and ideas – our involvement with Accelerate@Babraham will allow us to do exactly that.”
BioMed Realty recently announced its expansion at Babraham Research Campus with construction now underway to deliver a 40,000 square foot purpose-built building with new fitted laboratory space. This joint venture with Babraham Research Campus Ltd will see BioMed Realty’s footprint at the Campus grow to more than 130,000 square feet across three buildings. The developments at Babraham Research Campus paired with BioMed Realty’s ownership of Granta Park have enabled a sustainable and dynamic ecosystem to help meet the pressing demand for life science and R&D space within the wider Cambridge Cluster.
