ABOUT
A place of international achievement and home to the ‘pioneers’ in genomics
The Wellcome Genome Campus is home to some of the world’s foremost Institutes and organisations in genomics and computational biology, committed to delivering life-changing science with the reach, scale and imagination to solve some of humanity’s greatest challenges.
The Campus has its roots in the Human Genome Project, which read and recorded the complete sequence of DNA in an individual for the first time, and transformed the way we study life.
Indeed, one-third of the original human genome was sequenced at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute and the precious data shared through the European Molecular Biology Laboratory’s European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI). Our scientists and engineers are continually pushing frontiers and sharing their knowledge openly.
Vision for the Wellcome Genome Campus
Over the next 25 years our Vision is for the Campus to become the most important international hub for scientific, business, educational and cultural activities flowing from genome sciences and biodata. We aim to build a community of aligned interests, from relevant disciplines, forming a critical mass of expertise and experience that drives forward new developments and conceives new opportunities in genomics and biodata.
Access world-class scientific facilities and talent
The Institutes have both “wet” and “dry” laboratories with specialised research facilities. A new dedicated high-throughput sequencing facility houses the Sanger Institute’s sequencing operation as well as the core sequencing facilities for Genomics England’s 100,000 Genomes Project. There is a state-of-the-art cell line facility and a Data Centre with over 20 petabytes of storage capacity.
The Campus is also home to one of the largest collectives of computational scientists in the world, with deep expertise to tackle the challenges and the technologies of “big data” for the life sciences.
Flexible space at the heart of the Cambridge biosciences cluster
Located 10 miles south of Cambridge the Biodata Innovation Centre provides flexible space for innovative businesses that complement the unique research and science of the Campus. Accommodation is available in a range of unit sizes to suit individuals and early start-ups, through to larger, more established businesses.
Growing your business
Our Vision is to facilitate the path between fundamental research and innovation for the applied benefit of genomics. We provide support for businesses, scientists and the NHS to grow including training, networking, mentoring and peer-to-peer learning to support individuals and businesses.
The Campus already has a history of successful collaborations. The Institutes, together with pharmaceutical companies such as GSK and Biogen, are working to reduce the time it takes to develop new medicine. The Centre for Therapeutic Target Validation (CTTV) is a unique partnership that brings to bear the most cutting-edge genomic research and computer science.
Learning and development
The Campus provides many opportunities for scientific training including free seminar programmes for Campus staff. EMBL-EBI runs hands-on courses and workshops in the use of its bioinformatics databases for research scientists from industry and academia. The Wellcome Genome Campus Advanced Courses and Scientific Conferences programme develops, organises and runs training and conference events at the forefront of biomedicine, with an emphasis on largescale approaches and innovative technologies.
Working at the Campus
The Institutes offer unrivalled career opportunities within an exceptional scientific community. Amenities and services at the Campus include a restaurant and cafe, gym and sports hall, car parking, security, coaches operating around the Cambridge area, and extensive landscaped grounds.
The stunning 125-acre Campus parkland includes a wetlands nature reserve. The Campus is ISO14001 accredited and has won various awards
