ABOUT
Sheppard Robson is an award-winning architecture practice with a reputation for designing world-class laboratory and R&D projects.
Our portfolio of experience covers a diverse range of wet and dry laboratories providing facilities for bio-medical research through to engineering-orientated activities. These range in scale from small projects (£0.5m) to large and complex facilities (£200m+).
The best scientific research demands high levels of precision in carefully controlled environments. Sheppard Robson applies an attention to detail that ensures facilities are designed to meet exacting requirements. Our projects look to the future, providing flexibility to adapt to new practices and requirements. We are skilled in designing spaces that encourage interaction, enhancing the opportunities for informal as well as formal collaboration between scientists.
Innovation and sustainability
Sheppard Robson recognises its clients’ requirements for facilities that meet market requirements in terms of both efficient spatial planning and low operational costs. The practice is leading the way in this area and in recent years has completed two research projects with UKSPA on the theme of sustainability and future trends in science park design.
The practice’s design approach is defined by the exploration of new ideas, processes and technologies, and our commitment to sustainability. Utilising our experience of working with industrial, commercial and academic research clients we are able to provide the most appropriate solution to our clients’ briefs. In addition to architecture and interior design services, our core business also includes site masterplanning. All of these services can be provided on an individual or combined basis to meet the aspirations of our clients.
Sheppard Robson integrates sustainability into our design and business processes providing a consistent set of principles to our clients and building users. Of our recent laboratory projects, Citylabs, Imperial Centre for Translational and Experimental Medicine (ICTEM) and Life Sciences Building for University of Bristol have all achieved a BREEAM Excellent rating
Supporting science park research throughout the UK
Working from our London, Manchester and Glasgow offices, Sheppard Robson has significant experience across all spectrums of business, from public sector through to corporate multinationals, undertaking projects varying in scale from substantial masterplanning proposals to the fit out of individual incubator spin out units.
Recent and ongoing projects include Citylabs in Manchester, Daresbury Science Park, i3 at Irvine, Scotland and the West of Scotland Science Park. Previous commissions for UKSPA membersn include projects at Cambridge Science Park, CEME Innovation Centre, European Marine Science Park and The Imperial College Incubator.
Recent projects
The practice has recently completed Bristol Life Sciences Building which is the University of Bristol’s biggest construction project to-date, using confident, modern architecture to attract the best staff and researchers as well as enabling new ways of working. Completed last year, our Citylabs scheme in Manchester is a new concept in the provision of rentable high-specification office and medical facilities. Sheppard Robson designed the fit-out for a major potential tenant and the building was nominated for Project of the Year by RICS North West.
One of the practice’s projects at the Edinburgh BioQuarter received the S-Lab award for Best New Laboratory. Discussing the project, our client said that the project is “an iconic building, visually striking and functionally state-of-the-art, it provides the magnet we need to recruit the brightest and the best.” We have also written and edited the chapter on laboratory design for two editions of the Metric Handbook, the definitive guide in the UK to best practice in design
