Fifty-one weeks of the year, the businesses based at BioCity are busy tackling global environmental and health challenges. But for one week only, they tackled a different type of challenge.

The competition, organised by BioCity, asked companies to grow their own Christmas tree and create a festive scene around it. Click here to see some of the entries

With its roots in science, the competition centred around trees which could grow ‘magic crystals’ in just 24 hours using kits made up of basic lab supplies.

Many of the companies took the opportunity to incorporate their work and put the challenges they’re trying to solve, centre-stage. Worn Again, currently developing circular recycling tech for textiles by recapturing raw materials from end use textiles, built a scene around bottle flakes and cotton.

Azotic Technologies, a sustainable agriculture tech company who use natural nitrogen fixation to resolve nitrogen fertiliser overuse and pollution, created a wild, plant-based scene.

Companies submitted their entry by tagging @BioCity and #HomeToTheCurious on social media. Deciding on a winner was no mean feat, but the moving sleigh, real snow, music and overall theatrics of CooperGenomics entry, is what earned them the title of ‘Ultimate BioCity Christmas Champion 2018’.

Gemma Cann, Head of Marketing said

“The companies who call BioCity home are busy changing the world. Their time and energies are spent developing ground-breaking technologies; so, we really appreciate it when they take time out to get involved with events on site.

Throughout the year we host socials, pizza and beer evenings, Thirsty Thursdays and BBQ’s. But at Christmas we try to give the companies something a little bit different. Alongside the Christmas Tree competition, we held a group-wide quiz and get involved in Save the Children’s Christmas Jumper Day.

Last year we held a ginger bread house competition and the entries were fantastic, but this year we were blown away!”
