York Biotech Campus to launch new Insect Quarantine Unit

York Biotech Campus (YBC) it set to launch a brand-new, state-of-the-art Insect Quarantine Unit following a significant investment.

The specialist facility has been relocated and completely rebuilt within a vacant unit on the YBC site, enhancing the capabilities of long-standing occupier Fera Science Ltd.

Spanning 2,500 sq. ft., built to the highest industry standards and with sustainability in mind, the new unit provides Fera Science Ltd with a purpose-built environment to carry out advanced research and development on invertebrate quarantine pests as part of its remit in ensuring the UK’s biosecurity.

The launch marks a major step in YBC’s ongoing support for scientific innovation and providing world-class infrastructure for its occupiers. The facility enables Fera Science Ltd to expand its capabilities in insect research, including work that supports government policy objectives, biosecurity, food security targets, and environmental sustainability.

The unit is designed to house and study a wide range of invertebrate species under strict quarantine conditions. The unit plays a vital role in Fera Science Ltd’s work with the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), supporting research into invasive non-native species.

Axentia Biotech has managed the programme on behalf of YBC, providing an end-to-end service of laboratory design expertise with construction tender, procurement and management, to assist YBC in its provision of class-leading tenant facilities.
