The Babraham Research Campus’ vision is to be one of the best places in the world for discovery bioscience research and innovation; a leading sustainable ecosystem to start, nurture, scale and grow bioscience business.
Already one of the UK’s leading locations to support world leading discovery research and early-stage bioscience enterprise, the Campus partners (The Babraham Institute, the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, and Babraham Bioscience Technologies Ltd) have recently undertaken a strategic review of the Campus and the opportunity for its future development. This review built on evidence and understanding of the Campus’ success and existing strengths as identified in the Campus Impact Report1. As a distinct co-location of academic research and commercial bioscience enterprise the Campus already plays a pivotal role in the Cambridge life science ecosystem, supporting excellent discovery bioscience, and the start-up and scale-up of entrepreneurial business.
Details released today highlight the key elements of the refreshed strategy, which sets the course for the continued development of the Campus. The strategic objectives identified aim to deliver a highly connected, sustainable and dynamic ecosystem that creates new discoveries, therapeutics, jobs and growth to support the UK economy.
At the heart of the new strategy is a commitment to ensure that the Campus builds on its research and entrepreneurial strengths, develops people and talent, and continues to grow and play an active role in the development of the Cambridge life science cluster and the broader UK life science ecosystem.
A major strength of the Campus is the co-location of the world leading academic research and capability of the Babraham Institute with over 60 start-up and bioscience companies. The strategy seeks to ensure that excellent research (both academic and commercial) continues to flourish, and that the capabilities and facilities on site are enhanced to support both the start-up and scale-up phases of a bioscience company’s journey. To that end, the further development of the Campus, with support from third parties, to build upon the public sector investment made to date is a key objective. From that further Campus growth, support to the Campus community and wider cluster will be enriched, and the Campus can boost its contribution to nurturing the scientists and entrepreneurs of tomorrow.
