Founders, investors and industry figures gathered at Oxford North to discuss how the city can build on its research strengths to grow more artificial intelligence companies.
Oxford North, the new global innovation district, hosted a breakfast roundtable on the future of artificial intelligence in Oxford, chaired by Fortune AI Editor Jeremy Kahn.
Held at The Red Hall, the discussion brought together founders, investors and ecosystem leaders from across the city’s AI and technology sector, including representatives from StratXcel, Lumenai, NatWest Accelerator, Lumai and NavLive. Together they explored what it would take to turn Oxford’s research strength into a stronger pipeline of scaling AI companies.
The conversation centred on Oxford’s advantages. World class research, ambitious founders, exceptional early career talent, a globally recognised name and easy access to London all featured strongly. Attendees agreed the bigger challenge lies in that Oxford still lacks a clear commercial front door, somewhere talent, capital, academia and industry can find one another quickly. Those ingredients already exist, but they remain scattered across institutions, departments and networks rather than working together.
Guests were clear that raising Oxford’s profile is not simply about telling its story more loudly. It means making the city’s innovation ecosystem easier to see, easier to enter and easier to scale within. That will require faster bridges between research and business, more experienced operational talent and growth capital and a stronger pull for frontier AI labs and major technology companies. Rather than trying to replicate Silicon Valley, participants agreed Oxford should build on what already sets it apart: intellectual rigour, global trust, research depth and a remarkable concentration of people working at the edge of what’s possible.

The roundtable formed part of a busy year of events at Oxford North, with today’s discussion marking the circa 20th hosted at the district in 2026 so far. Three previous events this year focused specifically on artificial intelligence, including the Building AI for Business Hackathon in May, organised by The AI Centre for Business, and a panel discussion on AI in healthcare hosted by The Hill Group, which explored questions of ethics and governance. In June, Oxford North also welcomed 50 delegates to a Google Deeptech event with Barclays Eagle Labs, giving attendees hands-on experience of large language models and robot programming.
Oxford North caters to the whole science, technology and innovation ecosystem, from start-ups and spinouts through to global giants, offering the full lifecycle of space, from fitted labs and turnkey solutions through to grow-on space and bespoke buildings.
Beyond its innovation space, Oxford North is open to the public. Taylors Oxford North café welcomes visitors throughout the day and looks out onto Fallaize Park, a 2.25 acre public green space which sits at the heart of the site. There are more than 30 co-working and breakout spaces available free of charge and the district’s 100-seater auditorium can be booked for events, panel discussions and training days
