Cambrex’s Midlothian laboratory space doubled

A company, which carries out research and development into new salt forms and crystallisation technique for pharmaceutical compounds, has doubled its laboratory space at Edinburgh Technopole.

Cambrex has taken over a whole new floor of the Fleming Building on the Bush Estate site, increasing its lab and office space to 15,000sqft2.

The expansion will allow Cambrex to hire up to 30 new laboratory staff over the next three to five years, with most of its current staff being graduates from Scottish Universities such as Heriot-Watt and Strathclyde. The new space has also allowed the installation of 13 new fume cupboards for safe chemical experimentation and will increase their capacity to conduct more projects for their worldwide list of clients.

Mark Benger, site director for Cambrex, said: “This expansion is a key part of our growth plans for the future, increasing the work we can do here and the number of people we can employ. Edinburgh Technopole is the perfect place for us to achieve our ambitions, carry out world class research and contribute to the local economy.

Cambrex has been based at Edinburgh Technopole since 2012 and have steadily grown their presence at the site ever since, using the support and flexible space on offer at the science park.

Judith Sanderson, park manager at Edinburgh Technopole, said: “We are delighted Cambrex have expanded their presence at Edinburgh Technopole again. This is a testament to their hard work as well as the supportive and collaboration environment that exists here.

“This kind of expansion shows that some parts of the economy are continuing to thrive even in difficult circumstances and that science parks like Edinburgh Technopole will be key to our collective success in the future.”
