Back in 2021, UKSPA appointed two individuals from amongst the Association’s membership to act as Early Career Professional Observers to the UKSPA Board. Following an open application process, Emily Roberts (Outreach & Community Manager at M-SParc – Menai Science Park) and James Latham (then Development and Leasing Director at Stevenage Bioscience Catalyst – now Director, Pioneer Group) were appointed to these roles for an initial 12 month period. They have both contributed greatly to the work of the Association over their tenures, which were extended to 24 months to account for the challenging landscape following the Covid pandemic.
This initiative has been highly successful, and will therefore be repeated in 2023, so we are once again asking for applications from those individuals at Member locations who may not yet be in senior leadership roles but are keen to expand their Board-level experience and contribute to the strategic development of UKSPA over the next two years.
Emily Roberts has provided some thoughts on her experience of the role,
‘‘The experience as an Early Career Professional Board Observer gave me a great insight into the workings of a multi-organisation membership operation. To hear feedback and advice from experienced Science Park members was extremely interesting, and I was fortunate enough to gain a mentor who supported me on my career journey’’.
James Latham added,
‘‘It has been a privilege to work with the UKSPA Board and Executive Team over the past two years. I have seen first-hand the team work together to foster a culture of continuous learning to face micro- and macro-level challenges head-on and promote the interests of its Full, Associate and Business Affiliate Members. I am grateful to have had the chance to participate in Board meetings and Strategy Days that help shape the direction of the Association, hold seminars that debate and tackle key issues facing the science and technology sector and expand my professional network at the UKSPA Conferences’’.
