Sensor City Overview

Sensor City is an award-winning innovation hub, enabling businesses to undertake rapid prototype development and promote their sensor solutions and IoT applications to a global market.

Partners

Backed by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), Sensor City is a joint venture between The University of Liverpool and Liverpool John Moores University and is one of the UK’s flagship University Enterprise Zones.

Collaborative approach

Positioned at the intersection of industry and academia, Sensor City fosters relationships between SMEs and its University partners, enabling prototype development to take place with speed and accuracy.

By capitalising on the world-leading research, facilities and student talent available, companies can de-risk innovation and more confidently embrace digital technologies, strengthening and ultimately futureproofing their operations.

Technology support

Launched in November 2017, the innovation hub has completed more than 50 technical projects in their laboratories for businesses across the world, spanning a wide range of industries.

Sensor City’s on-site laboratories contain over £1m of state-of-the-art equipment which allows their in-house engineering department to combine digital additive manufacturing and PCB design with traditional engineering techniques, to create bespoke solutions for companies. Their team have an extensive multi-discipline knowledge base, with a broad spectrum of capabilities covering most electrical and mechanical disciplines.

The Sensor City engineers, approach and on-site facilities mean that innovative solutions can be tested and prototyped in a safe and controlled environment before being presented to customers and investors. Having this process in place to prove product feasibility significantly impacts a business’ access to further funding as well as target markets’ understanding and adoption of new technologies.

Business support

Home to a range of high-quality office and hot desk suites, Sensor City offers an environment where businesses engaged in the development of sensors and IoT can thrive. It has also developed an innovative, collaborative and specialist community through its growing membership base, which contributes to the wider regional technology ecosystem.

Sensor City has over 100 members who work across numerous industries including healthcare, smart infrastructure, manufacturing and digital. A dedicated delivery team works closely with members to provide introductions to corporate partners, facilitate internships and raise the profile of their current projects.

Events

The innovation hub also contains a number of event spaces, including a conference suite and roof terrace offering views across Liverpool’s Knowledge Quarter and world-famous skyline. It is available for commercial bookings, as well as hosting a series of thought leadership events and technology workshops.
