The Clinical Innovation Zone, located within the new Queen Elizabeth University Hospital campus (the largest acute medical facility in Western Europe), provides 22,000 square feet of high specification units designed to foster open innovation and access to world-leading clinical academics, outstanding clinical research facilities, state of the art facilities and industry partners co-located on site.

The Clinical Innovation Zone offers precision medicine, imaging and diagnostic companies an outstanding opportunity to collaboratively accelerate their research towards impacts on patient care, society and the economy.

Available space can be utilised for office or laboratory operations, up to category 2.

An Innovative and world class location

The University’s investments at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital have established Glasgow as a world leader in precision medicine. A key enabler of this success has been the multidisciplinary approach bringing together Academia, Industry and the NHS within the Clinical Innovation Zone.

The £20M Stratified Medicine Scotland Innovation Centre (SMS-IC), based within the Clinical Innovation Zone is a Scotland-wide academic collaboration with industry. A world class centre of research, innovation and commercialisation in precision medicine, its development has been led by University of Glasgow.

The Clinical Innovation Zone is also home to the University’s Imaging Centre of Excellence (ICE), which includes an ultra-high resolution 7 Tesla MRI scanner – the first of its kind to be fully integrated within a clinical site in the UK, underpinned by world-leading clinical academic expertise in stroke, cardiovascular disease, and brain imaging.

In close proximity is the £3.4 million University of Glasgow Molecular Pathology Node (established in partnership with industry and NHS GG&C and is supported by Medical Research Council and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council funding). The purpose-built Laboratory Medicine Building boasts the largest number of consultant pathologists in the U.K.

The NHS GG&C Biorepository which has a register of previously obtained tissue collections that are available for new research proposals as well as established pathways for the collection of new samples is also within the lab building.

Ensuring the hospital is at the forefront of the development of new medicines in both adult and paediatric medicine is a £5M Clinical Research Facility – one of only two CRFs in the U.K. to have co-located space for adult, adolescent and paediatric clinical trials.

The closely located Teaching and Learning Building is in the enviable position of providing additional clinical skills facilities and a 500 seat lecture theatre.

In summary, the Clinical Innovation Zone provides an unrivalled opportunity for tenant companies to engage with world leading research in a state of the art clinical environment.

Flexible Space

The Clinical Innovation Zone has been designed with collaboration at its heart. The innovative working environment, at the interface of academia and the NHS, provides an opportunity for industry to secure lab, office or hot desking space.

Available space consists of 22,000 square feet of high specification managed units in a modern and secure environment. Units can be easily and rapidly configured to accommodate office or laboratory operations, up to category 2.

Single or multiple desks are also available in our Touchdown Space; a creative working environment designed to initiate and facilitate collaboration.

Managing the Clinical Innovation Zone

Managed by the University of Glasgow, the Clinical Innovation Zone is one of three innovation-focused facilities funded by Glasgow City Region City Deal and benefits from strong links to the other pioneering facilities (with access to a broad range of business support).

The Clinical Innovation Zone seeks companies across the broad spectrum of precision medicine, imaging and diagnostics who wish to collaborate with academic and NHS researchers; including the Stratified Medicine Scotland Innovation Centre. Licence agreements are flexible and designed to support the aspirations of our partners -short or longer term.

Flexibility also extends to touch down space developed for companies, including overseas companies, who do not wish to have a permanent base on site.

Professor Dame Anna Dominiczak, Regius Professor of Medicine, Vice Principal and Head of the College of Medical, Veterinary & Life Sciences at the University of Glasgow, said “What makes this hospital campus so exciting is the ‘triple helix’ partnership between the NHS, University and industry. We have a world-leading University working with a forward-thinking health board and access to some of the brightest and best industry partners on earth.”

Serene Lek, CEO of Clinnovate Health UK Ltd, Singapore investor, said “We are excited to be located at the heart of the Precision Medicine Ecosystem within the University of Glasgow. We see great synergy with the various entities, given that we focus on both integrative diagnostics and personalised treatment.”

“It has since helped us to accelerate partnerships with a number of groups within Scotland and the NHS who are carrying out clinical research into cancer, fibrosis and kidney transplantation.”
