DESCRIPTION:To mark the 25th anniversary of the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research\, the University of East Anglia (UEA)\, which leads the Tyndall Centre\, is holding its largest ever climate conference. Many of the brightest minds on climate change are attending to discuss the ‘critical decade for climate action’ ahead of us and to discuss what university research needs to happen in the next five years that is truly useful for climate change action. \nThe Tyndall Centre an interdisciplinary and policy-relevant climate change research centre. It is a partnership of universities led by UEA that was set up in 2000 to conduct cutting-edge\, interdisciplinary research\, bringing together researchers from the social and natural sciences with engineering to develop sustainable responses to climate change. It works with leaders from the public and private sectors to promote informed decision-making on mitigating and adapting to climate change. \nThe planet and its people are at a crossroads. The coming decade is critical if we are to achieve the progress necessary to address the climate challenge. \nThe four research themes to be addressed at the conference are: \nIdentifying the emergent and urgent transitions in this ‘critical decade’ \nUnderstanding the different constellations of options that could align our emissions with the Paris temperature and equity commitments \nHighlighting the barriers and enablers to delivering climate action at scale \nHow to build and sustain coalitions for action in an increasingly fragmented and climate-changed world \n  \nThe line-up of speakers is a ‘Who’s Who?’ of thought leadership on climate change- \n\nGoneri de Cozannet\, French High Council for the Climate\nDaniela Jacob\, Director of Climate Service Center Germany (GERICS)\nNigel Topping CMG\, Ambition Loop\, UK Climate Change Committee\, UN High Level Champion COP26\nHenry Neufedlt\, Head of Climate Change Unit\, World Agroforestry Centre\, Nairobi\nLorraine Whitmarsh MBE\, Director of Climate and Social Transitions\, University of Bath\nJason Lowe\, Head of Climate Services\, Met Office Hadley Centre and University of Leeds\nSandra Boegelein\, Lead Analysis People and Net Zero\, UK Climate Change Committee\nTom Crompton\, co-Director\, Common Cause Foundation\nJim Hall\, Fellow of the Royal Society\, President of the Royal Institution of Civil Engineering and Environmental Change institute\, University of Oxford\nPaul Ekins OBE\, University College\, London\nCatherine Mitchell\, Prof Energy Policy\, University of Exeter\nLindsey-Marie Armstrong\, School of Mechanical Engineering\, University of Southampton\nMary Barker\, School of Health Sciences and School of Environmental Sciences\, University of Southampton\nSaffron O’Neil\, Co-Director of the Centre for Climate Communication and Data Science\, University of Exeter\nHelen Adams\, Lead of Maximising UK Adaptation to Climate Change Hub\, Kings College London\nRob Wilby\, Prof Hydroclimatic Modelling\, University of Loughborough\nNeil Adger\, Dept of Geography\, University of Exeter\nSuraje Dessai\, Prof Climate Adaptation\, University of Leeds\nAlice Larkin\, Prof Climate Science and Energy Policy\, University of Manchester\nKevin Anderson\, Prof Energy and Climate Change\, University of Manchester\n\n  \nBook your place at the conference here. SUMMARY:World Food Prize Laureate winner to give 2025 John Innes Foundation Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Dr Cary Fowler\, former US Special Envoy for Global Food Security and 2024 World Food Prize winner will be delivering this year’s John Innes Foundation Lecture\, ‘Trends – Trouble – Tenacity: The food security picture for 2050’. It will be held at the John Innes Conference Centre at Norwich Research Park starting from 1.30-2.30pm on Friday 23 May. \nThe preponderance of evidence indicates that we will fall far short of producing enough to meet global food demand and need by 2050. Climate\, soil degradation and loss\, water shortages\, conflict\, trade restrictions and underinvestment in agricultural research are combining to swell the numbers of food insecure and create an ugly world we should not bequeath to future generations. \nNo magic solutions exist but amongst the many good and positive things that could be done\, a few are strategic and essential. Dr Fowler will examine the challenges and point to a few of the most important responses we could be making. \nAt the State Department Dr Fowler launched the ‘Vision for Adapted Crops and Soils’ initiative and organised 150 Nobel and World Food Prize Laureates to raise the alarm about the growing challenges to feeding the world’s people by 2050. \nPreviously\, Dr Fowler led the Global Crop Diversity Trust and is best known for being the ‘father’ of the Svalbard Global Seed Vault. \nYou are welcome to attend in person so please register here. \n(Please note that you do not need to register to attend in person if you are already planning to attend the whole of Jonathan Jones’ ‘Looking Back to Look Forward’ event at the same venue.) \nYou can also watch a livestream of the lecture here. \n

SUMMARY:The 2025 Innes Lecture Following the Pepper: Black berries\, Asian trade and European empires
DESCRIPTION:This year’s Innes Lecture is being delivered by Prof Sujit Sivasundaram\, Professor of World History at the University of Cambridge\, who will look at the history of pepper and the role it plays in the world. \nIt will be held on Tuesday 29 April in the John Innes Conference Centre at Norwich Research Park. The event is free to attend and open to all. Please book your tickets here. \nDoors open at 6pm with the lecture starting at 6.30pm. \nPepper is the most widely used spice in the world\, but its widespread use was not always certain or predictable. \nThis lecture follows pepper’s journey from its origins in South India\, across the Indian Ocean\, and through many different hands\, before the Portuguese sought to take control of it. \nThe way pepper was harvested and traded to meet growing demand helped shape the plantation economy. The combination of the plantation economy and European colonisation played a huge role in shaping the modern world. Looking at how pepper was cultivated and traded\, reveals different ecologies\, trade networks\, labour systems and cultural influences. \nProf Sivasundaram’s last book\, Waves Across the South: A New History of Revolution and Empire\, won both the British Academy Book Prize and the Jerry Bentley Prize for World History. He is a Fellow of the British Academy.
