JOE DIXON, DIRECTOR OF ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY
TomTom is a leading independent location technology specialist, shaping mobility with highly accurate maps, navigation software, real-time traffic information and services. Headquartered in Amsterdam – with offices in 30 countries, including its engineering site at Edinburgh Technopole, Scotland – the company offers technologies that are trusted by hundreds of millions of people worldwide.
Location technology specialist TomTom creates innovative solutions to power connected vehicles, smart mobility and, ultimately, autonomous driving. Its engineering facility in Edinburgh is busy developing new solutions to enhance the customer experience even further, with software developers currently working on the next generation of digital maps. Joe Dixon, Director of Advanced Technology at the Edinburgh Technopole facility, explained: “We have over 20 engineers at this site, which was established in 2006 but expanded to the new unit in 2015. We are continuously developing exciting and innovative products and have already worked on a number of TomTom products, such as satellite navigation systems and real-time traffic systems that supply data to many car manufacturers including Renault, Nissan and BMW. For our latest digital map project, we use mobile tracking and our proprietary software to generate and analyse road traffic data, and feed that into the development of our various technologies. We have been collecting data for over 20 years, allowing us to connect vast amounts of information and provide maps with the highest level of detail and accuracy.”
“Our technology allows users to plan routes all around the world, monitoring traffic and potential delays, and providing travel times. Keeping up-to-date with the latest roadworks and building developments is a challenge, but our engineers are dedicated to reflecting these ongoing changes in our maps. Our technology allows us to quickly identify new information and update our maps accordingly in real time, which is a huge leap forward, and brings us closer to TomTom’s vision of a safe, connected, autonomous world, free of congestion and emissions,” Joe concluded.
