Shaping the Future for the Health and Wealth of Wales
The Institute of Life Science continues to flourish with Phase Two due for completion in November 2011.
ILS, opened in 2007, has six floors of labs, business incubation and support space The Institute of Life Science (ILS) is Wales' premier purpose-built medical research and business incubation facility. It is a partnership between Swansea University, Welsh Government, the NHS, IBM and other business partners.

The vision for the ILS is to advance medical science for the benefit of human health and to link those benefits to the economy. The first phase of the ILS vision – valued at £52 million – has already delivered a state-of-the-art building housing over 200 professional specialists in medical research, business incubation and technology transfer. It has also brought a High Performance Computing infrastructure through an effective collaboration with computer giant, IBM. Blue C, the IBM-built supercomputer dedicated to life science research has a permanent home at Swansea University as part of this collaboration.

Since opening in 2007, the ILS has encouraged the development of a life science and healthcare cluster in the region and business is thriving. Client organisations include Allerna Therapeutics Ltd, a drug discovery spin-out from the College of Medicine; Calon Cardio-Technology Ltd, developing the next generation of micro -pumps for the treatment of heart failure; Maimonidex (UK) Ltd, an inward investor developing novel treatments for arthritis and cancer; Seren Technology Ltd, focusing initially on the use of oxygen to bring health benefits to people in their own homes; Cell Therapy Ltd, offering innovative adult stem cell treatments; and the Boots Centre for Innovation, working with early-stage companies and inventors to develop exciting new consumer products.

Phase Two, opening in November 2011, will provide extra business incubation and access to specialist facilities Hot on the heels of Phase One, Phase Two aims to build capacity, expertise and infrastructure for the benefit of the health and wealth of the nation. Having received £28.8 million funding, it will provide a further 6,000 square metres of state-of-the-art, contiguous facilities in a building currently under construction on Health Board land adjacent to the award-winning ILS Phase One building. As well as a range of fully operational business incubation units, it will house a new Clinical Research Facility and an Imaging Suite for which Siemens Healthcare has been selected as the approved provider. Siemens, established in the UK since 1850, has a long track-record of working with universities, and a programme of research collaboration is now being planned across Swansea University and beyond. ILS Phase Two will also provide an up-to-the-minute home for the College of Medicine's public health, population sciences and health services research as well as the innovative Centre for NanoHealth.

The ILS is partly funded through the European Union Convergence Funding Programme and has a special interest in assisting Welsh SMEs. As well as housing a cluster of companies, the ILS also operates its Affiliate Membership scheme. Launched in 2010, ILS Affiliate is the celebrated 'soft-landing' option with a flexible offering tailored to each client. It also guarantees the very warm welcome that the ILS extends to all its residents and visitors alike.
