One of the oldest oceanographic institutions in the world, SAMS is committed to increasing knowledge and stewardship of the marine environment through research, education, maintenance of research infrastructure, and knowledge transfer. SAMS currently employs c.140 staff and is based at the Scottish Marine Institute near Oban on the west coast of Scotland. Part of the University of the Highlands & Islands, SAMS offers undergraduate courses, postgraduate research opportunities, field courses and CPD ensuring training and innovation for the future employees of the area and sector. European Centre for Marine Biotechnology The European Centre for Marine Biotechnology (ECMB) offers international development facilities for new-business tenants and other partners within serviced incubator space. Opening in April 2005, with support from SAMS, ERDF and HIE, the ECMB is the centre of a network of facilities with individuals, groups and companies moving freely between centres across the globe, enhancing collaboration and facilitating market penetration.Occupiers can take advantage of state-of-the-art facilities and bespoke services available including IT support, meeting rooms, conference facilities, engineering, stores, security, cafe and library. All these facilities are available to occupants of the ECMB. Property is offered in ranges of size to suit the business needs of residents. This incubator space compliments the facilities that will be available within the EMSP, allowing companies to choose the right environment for their needs. Science Park It is anticipated that the European Marine Science Park will be of particular interest to start-up businesses, spin-outs and SMEs who are interested in the combination of an outstanding marine environment with world-class scientific knowledge available at this location. Small companies and start-ups will benefit from the services offered in the ECMB, whilst Phase 1 of the Science Park will provide high quality, sustainable accommodation containing accelerator space for expanding companies. The Science Park will create and nurture an environment where businesses can thrive through the application of a cluster of scientific expertise to the marine environment. First-class business support will be available to all tenants from Highlands & Islands Enterprise and Scottish Development International to ensure that the businesses operate effectively and profitably in the shortest time possible. Development Construction for Phase 1 of the Science Park is expected to go on-site in August 2011 and be completed by July 2012. Phase 1 includes laboratory and office space in a highly sustainable building in a stunning location. Phases 2 and beyond will be determined by demand and sector development. The total development at the Science Park will be 5,400 square metres, to be built in phases spanning a period of 10 years.
