History and Objectives Liverpool has a rich heritage of innovation and science commercialisation. In recent years, the City has seen massive investment into its knowledge-economy through its two world-class universities and development of specialist infrastructure. In 2000 a decision was made to create a Science Park for Liverpool that would act as a 'home' and a focus for commercial knowledge enterprise in the City Region.Liverpool Science Park will evolve in a number of parallel phases over the next ten years and it is anticipated that it will grow to in excess of 500,000 square feet of specialist research accommodation. Phase 1 of the programme has been the delivery of Innovation Centre 1, which opened in January 2006. This was followed with the completion of Innovation Centre 2 in April 2009. Liverpool Science Park consists of two high quality, fit-for-purpose, multi-occupied buildings which are providing young research and development companies, and associated organisations, with an optimum environment in which to deliver their business plans. When plans for a science park in Liverpool were announced estimates of the park's success were conservative. It was predicted that Liverpool Science Park would attract five new companies a year over a five year period. Four years into operations and Liverpool Science Park's Innovation Centres already have tenanted over 50 resident companies, making Liverpool Science Park the second fastest growing science park in the UK and far surpassing original expectations. Plans for a third building have already started with expected completion to be in 2012. Innovation Centre 3 (ic3) is to be of the same flexible infrastructure that has been so attractive in LSP's other facilities. Chris Musson, CEO for the Science Park said: 'We've done very well in a difficult climate and tapped into a demand for bespoke and innovative companies.' Premises Liverpool Science Park Innovation CentresLiverpool Science Park's Innovation Centres are in the heart of Liverpool's thriving knowledge quarter adjacent to the campuses of Liverpool University and John Moores University. Innovation Centre 1 (ic1) comprises 43,755 square feet (4,065 square metres) of purpose-designed accommodation in a world-class facility that offers unrivalled facilities in a central location to young innovation-led or research-based companies with intellectual property in the science, engineering, biotechnology, IT and knowledge sectors. Following the success of ic1, Liverpool Science Park's second state-of-the-art facility, Innovation Centre 2 (ic2), opened its doors in April 2009. Situated in the striking environs of Liverpool's Metropolitan Cathedral, ic2 provides 40,000 square feet (3,716 square metres) of highly specified flexible office and laboratory compatible accommodation for the science park's expanding companies and for new enquirers. The fully flexible facilities vary with a variety of rooms to suit all requirements. Co-located with ic1, ic2 forms part of the 'innovation cluster' at the heart of Liverpool's Knowledge Quarter – an area comprising landscaped public spaces, access to university facilities and a host of amenities including theatre and restaurants. In addition to high-quality office accommodation, ic2's top-of-the-range ICT infrastructure provides hi-tech companies with 'plug and go' access to high-speed internet connectivity as well as a range of added value services, business support and social activities. In addition to the existing high specification grade A office space, Liverpool Science Park is converting the ground floor of ic2 to 5,000 sq ft of commercial laboratories. Life sciences is a major contributor to the city's economy, employing over 4,000 people and generating turnover of around £250m a year. This sector has been identified as having significant growth potential. The five new bespoke 1,000 sq ft laboratories start to address the current shortage of commercial laboratories in the city, and mark an important milestone in the long term development of Liverpool's knowledge economy. The arrival of laboratories at Liverpool Science Park reflects the science park's close partnership with the University of Liverpool's renowned MerseyBIO incubator, which is currently at capacity. The new laboratories mirror MerseyBIO's offering and the two organisations will be working in conjunction to promote the city's additional laboratory space to a national and international audience. A third building is also planned on the same City Centre site as ic1 and ic2. Detailed planning consent has been granted and a funding package is currently being put together. It is expected that this will open in 2012.Companies at Liverpool Science Park enjoy specialist business support and access to business networks and the expertise of leading research emanating from Liverpool John Moores University, the University of Liverpool and elsewhere in the North-West of England. Operating features include:
