The Centre for Innovation and Enterprise at Begbroke Science Park Introduction
Begbroke Science Park is a pioneering development for the University of Oxford. It offers a unique environment where world-class scientists work alongside colleagues from industry, decision-makers and entrepreneurs to translate cutting-edge research into commercial opportunities. Begbroke is much more than a conventional science park. Closely integrated with the University of Oxford's science and technology departments, it acts as a conduit for knowledge and technology transfer between researchers and entrepreneurs, helping them to understand each other's languages and forge dynamic partnerships.

Begbroke Science Park lies 5 miles from Oxford city centre and provides 12,000 square metres of office and laboratory space, adapted and extended to house research facilities and new hi-tech businesses. It is home to research groups from six different academic departments and over 30 high technology/start-up companies which have either spun out of the University or which have located here because of the close links available.

Begbroke stimulates proactive opportunities to maximize the interactions between academic and industry site users. These include the hosting of industry networks and industry-facing services to bring companies to site and to help companies on site to mix. These industry-facing activities are complemented by academic activities which build on the strengths of both communities. The activities include, for example, the Oxford Materials Characterisation Service (Begbroke-Nano), the Materials Knowledge Transfer Network, the Environmental Knowledge Transfer Network, and the University of Oxford Knowledge Transfer Partnership Office. There are also links to the University of Oxford Saïd Business School, which offers soft skills training, as well as formal and informal events and networking opportunities.

Oxfordshire forms a natural hub for science and innovation companies, who come together because of the close proximity of other science-based companies and access to the range of complementary services that these companies require.

The Centre for Innovation and Enterprise
Aerial View of Begbroke Science Park The Centre for Innovation and Enterprise (CIE) accommodates some of the site's science-based start-up and spin-out companies, offering them a professional environment in which to expand and grow. The centre offers an entrepreneurial atmosphere where companies can interact with academics, giving tenants the unique benefit of access to the University of Oxford's world-leading research programmes and opportunities to talk with experts in their field.

The CIE houses a mixture of ground and first floor wet and dry laboratory and office spaces which have been designed for maximum flexibility in use. The innovative use of service risers means specialist facilities can be installed easily and cost-effectively.

Flexible agreements with one month notice period enable companies to expand into more space as and when needed without making a long-term commitment. Rent of the space, business rates, building insurance, cleaning, maintenance, heating, lighting, site security, landscaping, use of meeting rooms and common areas is incorporated in the monthly fee. All site tenants benefit from a full range of facilities and support services including:
  • reception which provides telephone switchboard, secretarial services, a meeting room and hospitality booking
  • management team to support companies
  • high-speed site-wide wireless internet
  • digital and analogue telecommunications
  • structured cabling throughout to allow easy networking of equipment
  • 3 phase power supply (if required)
  • advice and support when setting up laboratory spaces
  • close integration with academic departments
  • business support
  • regular networking events and seminars
  • conference and meeting facilities
  • on-site IT support
  • CEO forum
  • sports and social networking opportunities
  • cycle routes from the centre of Oxford and cycle racks

Institute of Advanced Technology
The Institute of Advanced Technology The Institute of Advanced Technology (IAT) accommodates a broad spectrum of applied Academic activity. The aim of the IAT is to house inter-departmental University and commercial research activities working across disciplines in the Energy, Nanotechnology, Aerospace and Automotive sectors, as well as Environmental and ICT. For example: Other Facilities
The site operates a series of industry-facing services and networking activities. These include a lunch-time seminar series for site users to share experiences, a Begbroke Seminar series with invited speakers from industry and a series of soft skills training activities focused on the needs of Small and Medium Enterprises. All of this is in addition to operating as a regional hub and participating in many local and national formal networks. Examples of two of the services are offered below.

The Hirsch Building Oxford Materials Characterisation Services (OMCS) and BegbrokeNano
OMCS and BegbrokeNano provide industry with characterisation and analytic services based on access to the expertise and state-of-the-art facilities of the Department of Materials at the University of Oxford. This successful service provides a focal point for nanotechnology research and development in partnership with industry.

OMCS/BegbrokeNano offer:
  • a customer-orientated, dedicated team of experts specialising in the near-surface analysis and characterisation of solid materials and thin film structures, particularly metals, semiconductors, composites, biomaterials, polymers, ceramics and archaeological materials
  • a consultancy and problem-solving service for the investigation of materials and materials-related problems
  • analytical services with access to an unrivalled range of facilities for the characterisation of properties, composition and structure of materials
  • fast and reliable turnaround
  • quality assured service
  • confidentiality
  • routine quality control analysis
  • routine single sample analysis.
The Begbroke Cleanroom
A Laboratory The Begbroke Cleanroom came into operation in 2002 and provides 150 square metres of cleanroom space, class 10,000, housing a suite of newly purchased processing equipment. For details of the equipment see our interactive map. The facility has been cleverly designed to fit into the existing Christian Building. The air recirculating plant is located above the facility in the roof space; a not insignificant achievement on the part of the main constructors. Cooling for both the facility and the equipment located within is achieved by a chilled water plant with 80 kW capability located in the outside courtyard. The cleanroom monitoring and control has been provided by Seachange using SmartKontrols that provide an intelligent network. This system can be viewed and controlled using this building management system via a graphics package, 'Seachange Doorway', on a local pc computer.

Knowledge Transfer Partnership Office
The University of Oxford's Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) office initiates and supports KT partnerships between academics, companies and high-calibre graduates seeking to make an impact in the business environment. It enables companies to access the University's research expertise and facilities, academics to apply their knowledge to developing solutions to real-world problems and graduates to develop their business skills in tandem with involvement in hi-tech research at the University. KTPs can be in any area that is high priority for the company and will lead to an increase in their profitability, for example through:
  • improvement to existing products
  • development of new products
  • streamlining of manufacturing processes
  • improvements in logistical processes
  • development of marketing strategies.
For more details of the KTP scheme visit www.dti.gov.uk/ktp www.ktponline.co.uk.

Conferencing
The Farmhouse All tenants benefit from free access to most of the site meeting rooms. Begbroke's conferencing and meeting room facilities offer the perfect venue for an exhibition, product launch, training session, workshop, or simply to hold a business meeting. The range of meeting and conference rooms satisfies every need, from a discreet board meeting to theatre-style conference accommodating from 5 to 70 delegates. All rooms are equipped with modern conference facilities, including PA systems, presentation equipment and high speed wireless internet access. A dedicated conferencing team works closely with clients to cater meeting room facilities to meet individual needs. The mature walled garden adjacent to the farmhouse is a superb venue for large functions. The garden is also a delightful venue for special events. Overnight accommodation can be arranged via a number of good local hotels, some of which can offer concessionary rates. The meeting rooms are also available for hire to non-site users.

Hospitality Services
Begbroke's subsidised on-site restaurant offers a high standard of catering delivered to the meeting rooms. With good quality food in generous portions and freshly prepared in-house, the service is tailored to suit all palates. Alternatively, small groups can have lunch in the on-site restaurant where the menu changes daily.
