History and Objectives Elvingston Science Centre's objective is to provide a unique, innovative business environment, supporting a growing nucleus of high-tech, knowledge-based companies. The Centre is designed to enhance the technological and economic growth potential of East Lothian, Scotland. The Elvingston Science Centre was established in 1997 and promotes the commercialisation of University spin-outs and the incubation of new high-technology companies with prospects of rapid growth. The first 10,000 square foot unit was developed by Scottish Enterprise Edinburgh and Lothian, East Lothian Council and Simpson Research Ltd. Unit Two will substantially add to the lettable space currently available. Progress to Date Since the Centre opened, it has an average occupancy rate of over 80% and is currently 100% occupied. The centre has generated more than 150 technology-based jobs and is still growing! Simpson Research Ltd, site owner and manager, is also involved in several ‘virtual' incubation companies in different locations. Direct links with United Kingdom Science Park Association (UKSPA) and United Kingdom Business Incubation Limited (UKBI) are well established and will help support industry-wide best practices. Almac Sciences (Scotland) Ltd A British company which supplies chemically synthesised proteins to Pharmaceutical and medical researchers worldwide. Almac aims to meet the challenges arising from the Human Genome Programme. Sunamp Limited Sunamp was founded to respond to the need for low to zero-carbon heating, cooling and hot water systems in both domestic and commercial Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) applications. The company has invented a high power heat battery using phase change materials and is focused on research and development of an integrated heat store and processor whose technology will be highly adaptable, able to be rapidly scaled and tuned to many different applications. The company intends to manufacture and market its own products and to proactively seek out partners, recognised as major players in the HVAC market, who can rapidly address a variety of additional applications. Simpson Research Limited Simpson Research Limited is a high-tech consultancy that advises companies on business strategy and takes equity positions in start-ups. Elvingston Stud Elvingston Stud produces quality sports horses for top competition, and talented all-rounders for pleasure riders. Its breeding horses are hand-picked for temperament, conformation and ability to ensure the highest standard of youngstock. The staff at the stud have a wealth of experience in the equine world – showjumping at National level, showing, dressage, cross-country, backing, schooling and bringing on horses of all abilities, and even film work. Elvingston Science Centre has instituted a ‘Hot Desk' facility for companies which are still in the ‘germination' stage. Current companies include: PlasPac Ltd Design and Packaging. Those companies include: Conjunct Ltd, EnvironCom Ltd, Freelight Ltd, MMIV Ltd, ROBOP Ltd and Advanced Fibre Products Ltd. Land The Science Centre is situated in the grounds of the Elvingston House estate which is owned by Dr and Mrs David Simpson. Unit one occupies approximately one acre, with scope for a total of 60,000 square feet development in the future. Elvingston Science Centre is situated 15 minutes East of Edinburgh City and is located just off the A1 and minutes from Longniddry train station. Facilities Offered The Centre provides flexible unit sizes from 350 square feet to 1,540 square feet, fully managed reception facilities and office services, within an attractive setting. The Centre offers flexible tenancy arrangements, furnished accommodation, infrastructure with power, data, voice main communications and integral conference facilities. There is a 24 hour, tenant-controlled alarm system with CCTV. There are a range of tenant support services, telephone answering, with digital and analogue telephones with DDI/voicemail facilities, broadband access, word processing, photocopying, report binding, confidential document destruction, facsimile and postal services, use of conference and meeting rooms with audio-visual and presentation equipment, fully equipped kitchen/snack room with coffee machine and tenant tuck shop. In-house catering for special meetings/ conferences can also be arranged. Elvingston Science Centre also provides cleaning of common areas and individual units, building maintenance, refuse disposal, landscaping, toilet facilities with separate shower, on-site car parking. The Elvingston estate provides a pleasant rural environment with opportunities for jogging and walking. The busy market town of Haddington is easily accessible in five minutes, for shops, restaurants and hotels. Site Management and Arrangements Simpson Research Ltd manages the Centre and provides consultancy services for clients. Simpson Research Limited has a full range of resources to help start-up companies with their development plans, to ‘fast-track' products to market. Scottish Enterprise Edinburgh Lothian, one of the founding partners of the Elvingston Science Centre, continues to provide support to encourage rapid development and growth of start-up companies.
