History and Objectives
The Malvern Hills Science Park (MHSP) opened in October 1999. Its position adjacent to QinetiQ (Malvern) provides access to the knowledge and technology of one of Europe's largest research organisations. The Park was established to facilitate the spin-out of companies eager to exploit QinetiQ's lead in technologies developed for military use but with potential commercial applications. At Malvern, QinetiQ specialises in Sensors, Electronics and Communications. It is at Malvern that many technological breakthroughs have been made in fields as diverse as Radar and LCD panels.

Malvern Hills Science Park provides excellent facilities to encourage the growth of high-tech companies, having high-quality accommodation adjacent to QinetiQ. A manager onsite supports tenant companies to access business advice and the relevant technologies and personnel that are available through QinetiQ, including unsurpassed test and trial facilities, laboratories, aircraft, water tanks, anechoic chambers, environmental test facilities and ranges. The Park features meeting room and conference facilities in a beautiful situation nestling under the picturesque Malvern Hills.

Transport links are good, with a direct train service to Birmingham and London (Paddington). The M5 is some 20 minutes distant. Birmingham Airport is 1 hour away. MHSP was delighted to win the 2007 Excellence in Property Design Award including contribution to environmental sustainability and innovation in design sponsored by CUH2A for its latest phase 3 building development.

Progress to Date
Companies
Malvern Hills Science Park's newest environmentally-friendly building Existing tenants continue to grow, and new companies join the park all the time. MHSP has been noted for the creation of bespoke laboratory solutions for early-stage companies. It now has a critical mass of scientists with biology, chemistry and physics backgrounds working in start-up companies using a wide range of analytical and test equipment. Companies working with advanced materials, especially at the micro and nano level, are finding MHSP a great UK base. Computing science is also well represented, both hardware and software developers are active on the park and forensic science is the latest 'specialism'. A minority of companies retain links with military customers, both in the UK and overseas, some through relationships with QinetiQ and Dytecna.

Land
The Science Park is on a 10-acre site.

In Spring 2008 the award winning, environmentally-friendly phase 3 building added 35,000 square feet of offices, laboratories and conference facilities. The new building is heated and cooled using geothermal energy and has been supported by Advantage West Midlands, the regional development agency and support from the European Regional Development Fund. Some units are still available.

The Innovation Centre provides up to 23 discrete working units, ranging from 355 to 2,000 square feet. These units are available on short term leases. The Regional Technology Exchange was completed in December 2001 and this provides further units and laboratory facilities.

Premises
Most units are carpeted with a raised access floor. They share a manned reception area and kitchen facilities. Access to units and the shared area is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year through an electronic door access system. Units have network capability and there is access to broadband and a managed telephone system. Several laboratories have been developed onsite for the use of individual tenants and the park staff have a good appreciation of how to create a cost-effective laboratory from a shell scheme and project manage the build. The park is keen to welcome laboratory-based tenants.

Free Car Parking is Available on the Site
Rents are in line with similar quality accommodation in the area. A service charge covers shared costs and rates are paid direct to the local authority by tenants. All units are individually metered for electricity.

Site Management Arrangements
Services available include the following:
  • reception
  • fax
  • photocopying, binding, laminating, shredding service
  • franking and collection of external mail
  • telephone configuration, including voice mail box

  • dining area with cold drinks, snacks and sandwich machines
  • secretarial, handyman and cleaning services available
  • site security – electronic access and regular patrols
  • options to upgrade to List X status security.
