The main entrance looking towards the University of Birmingham campus Partners
Birmingham Research Park is a joint venture between the University of Birmingham and Birmingham City Council.

History and Objectives
The Research Park was established in 1986 as a location for new or developing small companies wishing to work with the University of Birmingham and benefit from the proximity of the University's research and technical expertise. Through the growth of these companies the Research Park contributes to local economic development and employment in Birmingham. By providing high quality accommodation adjacent to the University campus, and the University of Birmingham College of Medical and Dental Sciences, the Research Park offers an ideal site for companies and other commercial projects arising from within the University or coming to Birmingham to work with the University.

The Site
Land
A leafy outlook – the Institute of Research and Development Eight acres of land are reserved for Research Park use, comprising two neighbouring areas in Vincent Drive, Edgbaston. One is on a long lease from Birmingham City Council and the other is owned by the University.

Part of the site is occupied by the Institute of Research and Development, which was constructed in three phases between 1986 and 1991. The Institute offers flexible multi-unit accommodation for rental by small companies. The other main building is the ICT Centre, which was opened in February 2000 and offers purpose-built accommodation for companies whose business is IT-based.

Premises
The Institute of Research and Development offers over 45,000 square feet of lettable accommodation on three floors. Adjacent to the main entrance and reception area is a large conference facility. Small meeting rooms are also available. Units are constructed in modules of 340 square feet upwards. Central heating, lighting and single-phase power are provided to each unit, while gas, mains water and three-phase electricity are available from service ducts. There are lifts from each of the entrances to the upper floors.

The ICT Centre comprises 11,000 square feet of high-quality accommodation on three floors. A central demonstration/training facility is available, in addition to the conference facilities above. The £1.5m Centre has units from 380 square feet upwards. The building is pre-wired for internal networking and offers a high specification general telecommunications system.

Office services are available to tenant companies and there are also internal telephone and postal systems to the University, plus access to the Campus Network (if appropriate). The Research Park also offers on-site parking for both staff and visitors at no additional cost.

Current rental figures for both the Institute of Research and Development and the ICT Centre are available on application, together with details of the Service Charge which covers management, security systems, building maintenance and insurance, reception services, controlled car parking and heating, lighting and cleaning of the common areas. Tenancy Agreements are normally offered for periods of one to five years initially and may be renewed in appropriate cases. All enquiries regarding accommodation/tenancy should be addressed to Mrs P Marshall (see above for contact details).

Technology Transfer
Working in the UK NEQAS laboratory Of the companies previously or currently located at the Research Park, many originated within the University, their businesses being started on the basis of technology developed within the University. Several of these companies were spin-outs from the University by members of the academic staff. In some cases growth has led to changes of ownership and over the years several companies have subsequently relocated to larger premises elsewhere in Birmingham. Other organisations, both past and present, have located at the Research Park in order to make use of University expertise or facilities.

Alta Innovations Ltd, the University of Birmingham's technology transfer company is also located at the Research Park. Alta Innovations connect organisations with academic expertise and Intellectual Property to enable effective and innovative solutions to industry-based issues.

Alta Innovations Ltd is part of Research and Commercial Services (RCS), who are also located at the Research Park. RCS supports the academic community in accessing external research funding and has a wide ranging brief to encourage and develop commercial opportunities for the University.

University Facilities
The University of Birmingham offers facilities and expertise particularly in medicine, engineering and science, which are unique in the region and the equal of any in the country. More than 3,000 academic staff in 5 colleges constitute an enormous resource of expertise allied to laboratories, equipment and facilities of the highest standards. Units with particularly strong external relationships include the Interdisciplinary Research Centre for Advanced Materials, the Clinical Trials Unit at the Cancer Research UK, Institute of Cancer Studies, the Institutes for Occupational Health and for Public and Environmental Health, and the Wolfson Applied Technology Laboratory. Research support from government, industry and charitable sources is co-ordinated by Research and Commercial Services.

The staff of all companies based at the Research Park are offered access to the University Library, sports and leisure facilities on advantageous terms. Also, in addition to the on-site conference/ meeting facilities at the Research Park, meeting rooms and lecture theatres in the University may be available for hire by Research Park companies, subject to availability. Conference and residential facilities are available at the nearby University Conference Park.
