The University of Reading is one of the UK’s leading research-intensive universities. Located on the University campus, the Science and Technology Centre and Reading Enterprise Centre offer prime opportunities for entrepreneurial companies to develop and grow.
The Science and Technology Centre, pictured above, comprises approximately 3,000 square metres of lettable space divided between office and laboratory space while the Reading Enterprise Centre is a dedicated business incubator aimed at attracting innovative or technology-based companies.
Facilities and On-site Services
The Science and Technology Centre offers high-quality laboratories with excellent facilities and offices adjacent. The laboratories are fitted with benching, fume cupboards and centrally-provided services and labs are also supplied with filtered and conditioned air. Additional facilities include solvent storage and walk-in cold rooms. The building is wired for fully-integrated IT services and has a central computer room with UPS back up. There is ample parking, reception, meeting room access and there is an atrium coffee shop located in the centre. The facilities are well suited to early stage and growing companies in the bioscience, environmental, chemical or food sectors that require laboratory space.
The Enterprise Centre offers flexible office accommodation in units of 10 to 100 square metres, under short-term, flexible leases. The Centre currently houses a community of small high-growth-potential businesses.
As well as offering easy access to University facilities such as the library, restaurants and conference and sports facilities, the University offers excellent opportunities for research collaboration or access to numerous specialist technical services or to students or graduates for placements, work experience or for specific projects.
Opportunities and Links to the University
The University of Reading is one of the UK’s top 20 research-intensive universities, covering a broad spectrum of disciplines across Arts and Humanities, Social Sciences and Life and Physical Sciences, while the Henley Business School at Reading is one of Europe’s leading business schools. Research interests and expertise is thus both broad and deep. Specific strands have been established to enhance and develop research areas of particular strength which are in Sustainable Construction and Environments, Climate Systems Science, Computational Science and Informatics and Preventative and Therapeutic Health Sciences.
Within these areas a number of specific research centres and initiatives have been established, including the Walker Institute for Climate Systems Science, the Institutes for Cardiovascular and Metabolic Research and for Neuroscience and Neurodynamics, the Food Chain and Health initiative and a Simplification Centre focused on the way information is presented and communicated. These initiatives are supported by significant investments in research infrastructure which include the BioCentre and Chemical Analytical Facility offering proteomics and chemical and analytical analysis, the Centre for Advanced Microscopy, the fMRI scanning unit and the Supercomputing facility (see www.rdg.ac.uk/research for further information).
This breadth and depth of excellence provides an ideal platform for collaboration and support for companies choosing to locate at the University. Opportunities for interaction include research collaboration, consultancy, access to professional development programmes either related to technical disciplines or through the Henley Business School or opportunities to recruit high calibre students of graduates. The University runs a number of very successful schemes to encourage University-Business collaboration such as the Knowledge Transfer Partnership scheme which is open to organisations of all sizes and where businesses contribute only part of the cost. Each partnership is a three-way collaboration between a company, the University and at least one of the universities skilled, high-calibre graduates.
Business Support is available to companies locating at the University through Thames Valley Innovation and Growth Team, a Regional Development Agency-sponsored initiative to support innovative companies with potential for growth and to help technology and knowledge-based companies with pioneering ideas become thriving commercial concerns. They offer business planning and support, mentoring, high growth coaching and advice and support on investor readiness and access to finance (see www.innovationgrowth.co.uk/thamesvalley).
Construction has been initiated to further develop the business incubation capacity through the completion of a new 5,000 square metre Enterprise Centre (pictured right). Located adjacent to the Science and Technology Centre at the Earley Gate entrance to the University’s Whiteknights campus, the new Enterprise Centre will provide accommodation for early-stage and developing companies in a flexible combination of incubator units and grow-on space. Completion is targeted for early 2011.
