Entrance to The Surrey Research Park The Surrey Research Park is wholly owned by the University of Surrey's Foundation Fund.

History and Objectives
The Park was one of the founders of the UKSPA in 1984. After an initial period of planning, the construction on the site began in January 1984 and the first occupier moved to the site in 1985.

In developing The Surrey Research Park, the University of Surrey has five clear objectives which complement its existing industry/University links. These are:
  1. To assist with the economic development of the national, regional and local economy.
  2. To raise the profile and international reputation of the University of Surrey and Guildford as a centre of excellence in technology.
  3. To create an opportunity for technology transfer by strengthening the links between the University and industry.
  4. To help European-based industry maintain its competitive edge through fostering innovation.
  5. To create some independent income for the University of Surrey and to create an opportunity for academic staff to act as consultants to companies on the Park.
To achieve these objectives the University has built appropriate accommodation for small, medium and large technology companies. The Surrey Technology Centre offers both pre- and full incubation as well as operating as a business centre for innovative technology companies. The pre-incubation is part of the SETsquared consortium.

Progress to Date
Over 140 high-technology companies are now operating successfully from over 65,000 square metres of office and laboratory space on the Surrey Research Park. The total turnover of these companies is in excess of £500m.

As a Research Park there is a restriction on use to research, development and design in science (including the social sciences), engineering and technology development and design; however, a new facility for advanced manufacturing has been built for the University of Surrey's spin-out company SSTL which specialises in satellite technology. Space is offered ranging from units as small as 15 square metres in The Surrey Technology Centre to units of 10,000 square metres in purpose-built headquarters buildings. The site has been developed to enable companies to scale up on site, which helps with staff retention, and the ability to retain contact with the University and other important business networks.

The Surrey Technology Centre
View across the park to The Guildford Clinic The centre is a 6,000 square metre, two-storey building which offers 78 fully-serviced units from 15 square metres, available to occupiers with the primary objective of helping to drive technology up the value chain and to create wealth through its exploitation. These units provide tenants with a range of business support services including an excellent broadband connection, reception service, telephone system and access to meeting rooms. The building also offers a range of business development services which are part of the pre- and full incubation programmes. Around 40% of the current tenants in other buildings on the Surrey Research Park graduated from this building.

BOC Priestley Centre
The 12,000 square metre, £20m project is occupied by BOC, which is part of the Linde Group and houses senior scientists, engineers, technical and operational staff.

Chancellor Court
The first direct development by the University was pre-let in 1985 and has remained fully occupied since then. Chancellor Court comprises five buildings totalling 5,000 square metres. This development houses a wide range of high technology companies involved in diverse technology including electronics, clinical trials, system engineering, and pharmaceuticals. These companies include Detica and MedPharm.

Alan Turing Road
This development comprises four buildings totalling 3,500 square metres. These are fully occupied by both UK and US companies involved in bio-fuels (TMO), ocular science (Optegra), IT and computer games (Confirmit and Lionhead Studios).

Frederick Sanger Road
The University, as part of its commitment to supporting innovation, has built 32 self-contained units each of 120 square metres, which can be linked and let in groups of up to four. Let on short-term leases these have attracted great interest from both the University and small high technology companies in the locality. They provide vital grow-on space for companies that emerge from the Surrey Technology Centre.

Medawar Road/Nugent Road
This development comprises five buildings totalling 8,000 square metres. These buildings accommodate the expansion of four existing companies on the park as well as the consulting engineers, Hyder Consulting, the high level consultancy Detica, which was acquired by BAE systems, and the biotech company ReNeuron.

Huxley Road
This development comprises two buildings totalling 1,600 square metres, each of which offers four units of 200 square metres. Being adjacent to the Royal Surrey County Hospital, this building has attracted a number of companies involved in medical related activities. Others such as Grandeye and Deepwater EU are involved in high level technical work in the IT sector and corrosion technology.

Stirling House
This building offers six suites of 300 square metres. These units have provided a stepping stone for many companies that have grown from the Surrey Technology Centre. Today, the building contains six occupiers involved in either IT or medical technology.

Syngenta European Headquarters
This is a 6,500 square metre HQ that serves Syngenta's highly technical activities in the UK.

Occam Court
This comprises two high-quality buildings. These are occupied by IDBS (bio-informatics) and the computer games company Lionhead Studios (which is now owned by Microsoft).

George Stephenson Road
This development accommodates the University of Surrey spin-out company SSTL, which is a world-leading satellite and space engineering company. SSTL are now owned by the European aero-space consortium EADS Astrium. A 4,000 square metre manufacturing and technology centre is to open in early 2011 for SSTL.

Faraday Court
This development houses part of Detica. Detica has three units on the Park and has grown from a company of 30 people to one of over 1,200 and is now part of BAE Systems.

Guildford
Guildford is the county town of Surrey, the regional administrative centre for the South East Regional Development Authority (SEEDA) and a regional centre for business, education, shopping, culture and leisure. Over the past twenty years Guildford has emerged as a strong and successful commercial and technology centre in its own right. It is located 30 miles to the south west of London, at a point where north/south and east/west routes intersect, and is at the centre of a comprehensive communication network, which is highly accessible to UK, European and world markets. Central London is only 30 miles away and is connected to Guildford by excellent road and rail links. It has easy access to London Heathrow and Gatwick Airports.

Site Management Arrangements
The Research Park is a private estate which has been funded and developed by the University of Surrey and is managed by the University of Surrey Research Park team. Some units are leased on fully insuring leases, others are on short licences and in these cases the management is the responsibility of the University. The University of Surrey provides automatic membership of the University Library and access to other University facilities through occupation of the site.

The Park has been ducted to enable buildings to be linked with a private network. All three major telecomms suppliers have wired the site to provide substantial bandwidth.

University of Surrey and its Facilities
Surrey is one of Britain's technological universities. The teaching and research emphasis is towards science, engineering and technology and the University is committed to collaborating with industry as well as academic excellence.

Close links are maintained with industry through contracts and annual placement of undergraduates on their industrial and professional training year, which is part of the degree programme offered by the University. The University is successful in attracting research funds from industry.

Contact with tenant companies includes active participation in research contracts, consultancy and personnel exchange. The latter includes:
  • project work with students
  • sandwich course or co-op programme students taking placements with companies on the site
  • graduate employment that retains this human capital in the local labour market
  • training and exchanging employees between companies on the Park
  • collaborative research activities.
Academic Organisation
The University is organised into a number of academic faculties that include the following:

Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences
Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences
Faculty of Arts and Human Sciences
Faculty of Management and Law

Together these faculties are responsible for an extensive research portfolio and teaching 14,778 students.

Social and Recreational Facilities
The University and Guildford have much to offer in drama, music, fine art, film, literature and other activities which contribute to the intellectual and cultural life of the community. The University offers sports facilities for a wide range of activities and a new £38 million sports park has now been opened which welcomes participation by the companies on the Surrey Research Park.

In addition, Guildford, as one of Britain's major retail centres, offers a range of housing and has one of Britain's most exciting leisure centres, all of which are accessible from the Park.

Other Services Available
A number of facilities which have been developed to support teaching and research programmes are available to occupiers, including:

Automatic access to the University's Library.

Conference Facilities – over 2,000 bedrooms and 40 lecture theatres are available, and this is supplemented by a Holiday Inn that is on land adjacent to The Surrey Research Park.

Staff Training – the University trains technical staff to all levels, which includes postgraduate opportunities.
