It is an established, wholly-owned subsidiary of the University and operates on an arm's length commercial basis. Primarily formed to support early-stage technology businesses, the Science Park now accommodates over 60 companies of various sizes, including world leaders such as Cisco Systems and Merck Chemicals. All the companies on the park are engaged in research, development, 'high-tech' manufacturing or services which directly support businesses on the park. Flexible Leasing Opportunities The Science Park welcomes businesses of various sizes with space ranging from 200 square feet to 16,000 square feet. Accommodation can be fitted out to tenants' specifications and there are some opportunities for companies to acquire Science Park land on long-lease terms, allowing them to construct their own custom-designed buildings. If a company outgrows its accommodation, the Science Park offers considerable flexibility to existing tenants wishing to expand their accommodation footprint. The Science Park is dedicated to meeting the changing needs of its tenants. Leasing options have recently been extended to include allocated desks in shared offices in addition to the established 'Virtual Tenancy' system. This enables start-up companies to have a professional address without the expense of renting a dedicated office or making any long-term commitments. 'The 'allocated desks' system was ideal as it gave us the flexibility that we sought,' said Myles Jeffery, Managing Director of Thinkscape Ltd. 'Only one month's notice was required while rates, desks and high speed internet are all included in the monthly fee. It was simply a case of moving in and starting business the same day.' High-Quality Working Environment The Park is equipped with a range of services which combine to deliver a high quality working environment. The IT infrastructure provides Internet Protocol telephony, an onsite data centre and very high performance internet with low confliction rates. Tenants also benefit from ample parking, the availability of archive storage and the dual-routed power supply which serves the whole site. The Science Park is also proud of its environmental credentials, with state-of-the-art heat exchange systems in its most recent buildings as well as facilities for cyclists and a car sharing scheme. Southampton Science Park places considerable emphasis on its sense of community, which is supported by onsite amenities including a coffee shop, newly refurbished meeting rooms, a conference suite and the luxury hotel and leisure club at Chilworth Manor. A Facilities Department and Company Office is also based on the Park to assist tenants. The Park is set in idyllic surroundings and is adjacent to a 40 acre open access area incorporating ancient woodland, an ecology meadow, arboretum and lake. All the buildings on the Science Park are designed to be low impact and are in-keeping with their surroundings. Working Together On-site companies can provide tenants with a wealth of expertise, including IT and telephony support, financial, human resources, marketing and recruitment services. This is a reciprocal relationship for service providers on the Science Park who, in turn, benefit from being in close proximity to potential clients. There is also a wealth of networking opportunities on-site, including connections with the SETsquared partnership. The SEEDA-funded Solent Innovation Growth Network (SIGN) has a strong presence on the Science Park and supports businesses and entrepreneurs through access to professional services, high-growth coaches, business mentors, knowledge transfer and partner organisations. As a vibrant technology-based entrepreneurial community, the Science Park also runs an internal Park Network with plans to facilitate a range of informal seminars on topical issues, providing opportunities for tenants and external clients to interact. Links with the University of Southampton The Science Park enjoys close links with the University, giving tenant companies access to some of the UK's leading scientific expertise. About 20% of the companies on the Park originated from the University, either as spin-outs or as the brain-child of individual academic staff. This includes Science Park-based companies Perpetuum, Ilika and Nanotecture, which have been named in The Guardian's clean tech top 100 of 'Europe's Hottest Clean Technology Companies'. It is also the place of work for 130 Southampton graduates, representing a diverse range of disciplines from Music to Chemistry. Case Study – aap3 aap3 (previously known as Preferred International) was founded in 1998 by a team of technology service and IT industry specialists. The founders devised a specific managed IT service solution and quickly found themselves working with large corporate clients such as Cisco and IBM. From the start, the company grew at an exceptional rate and in 2003 was ranked as Britain's 29th-fastest growing company in the Sunday Times Virgin Fast Track 100 listing. The company's operational base was established in The Incubator on Southampton Science Park, where they benefited from flexible lease terms and easy access to meeting rooms/conference facilities. Within their first two years they had already out-grown their initial accommodation and were able to surrender their lease and expand into Delta House, a much larger, more self-contained facility on the Science Park. At the same time the company started to realise its global ambitions with expansion into the US by way of its first acquisition, 'BRAVO International', a managed service and marketing support company based in California's Silicon Valley. In 2008, Rod Jackson was appointed as President and CEO of aap3. Previously non-executive Chairman of the Preferred International Board, he brought extensive knowledge of the IT and service industry.
