Introduction
Technium Springboard Technium is a network of twelve innovation centres across Wales, supporting the growth of young science and technology businesses. Technium offers:
  • modern office accommodation in superb locations
  • easy access to general and specialist business support
  • advice on accessing finance and grant schemes
  • support for Research & Development through links with local academia
  • on-site facilities such as meeting and conference rooms and reception services (with some also offering restaurants, gymnasiums, clean rooms, laboratory space and workshops).
Partners
Technium is a partnership between the Welsh Assembly Government’s Department for the Economy & Transport, higher and further education institutions in Wales and the private sector, and has received support from EU structural funds.

History and Objectives
Technium was initiated as a partnership between the former Welsh Development Agency (now merged with the Welsh Assembly Government) and Swansea University, resulting in the development of the first innovation centre which opened at the SA1 Swansea Waterfront site in Swansea, South West Wales in 2001.

The objectives of Technium are to:
  • assist in the creation of new spin-out businesses from Welsh academia
  • help develop existing indigenous businesses in Wales
  • to provide a seamless mechanism to attract R&D inward investment opportunities.
In order to achieve these objectives, Technium provides businesses with state-of-the-art facilities, academic expertise and business support all under one roof.

Size
Technium buildings range in size from 21,500 square feet (2,000 square metres) to 82,000 square feet (7,618 square metres).

Progress to Date
Technium Aberystwyth
Technium Swansea Located on the coast of West Wales, Technium Aberystwyth provides incubation space for early-stage businesses across a range of technology sectors.

Technium CAST (Centre for Advanced Software Technologies)
Technium CAST is located at Bangor in North Wales and focuses on supporting companies exploiting the commercial potential of visualisation and communication technologies.

Technium Digital
This innovation centre is located on campus at Swansea University and caters for businesses specialising in digital technologies.

Technium Digital@Sony
Located within Sony’s UK Technology Centre at Pencoed, near Bridgend, Technium Digital@Sony supports companies specialising in electronics and digital devices and offers access to Sony’s on-site advanced manufacturing facilities.

Technium OpTIC (Opto-eletronics Technology & Incubation Centre)
This specialist facility is located at St Asaph Business Park in North Wales and includes incubation facilities and a state-of-the-art opto-electronics technology centre.

Technium Pembrokeshire
Located at Pembroke Dock in West Wales, Technium Pembrokeshire supports businesses across a range of technology sectors and includes state-of-the-art office accommodation and on-site workshops.

Technium Performance Engineering
This innovation centre is located in Llanelli, South West Wales and supports young businesses within the automotive, aerospace and motorsport sectors and will soon offer on-site workshop facilities.

Technium Sustainable Technologies
Located at Baglan Energy Park in South West Wales, Technium Sustainable Technologies provides incubation space for businesses specialising in renewable materials, energy and geo-environmental activities.

Technium Springboard
Located in Cwmbran, South East Wales, Technium Springboard supports technology-led businesses across a range of sectors.

Technium Swansea (includes 2 innovation centres)
Technium Swansea includes two innovation centres located on the SA1 Swansea Waterfront strategic development site in Swansea, South West Wales. The first of the two buildings opened in 2001 and the second in 2004. The centres accommodate young knowledge-based businesses across a range of industry sectors.

ECM2
The Engineering Centre for Manufacturing & Materials (ECM2) is based in Port Talbot and is a 22-acre site offering a range of office and laboratory space, as well as a number of high headroom bays suitable for large scale engineering development activities. Offering 80,000 square feet of lettable space, ECM2 houses embryonic and established companies, universities and research groups undertaking world class research, development and exploitation of new products and processes in the manufacturing engineering and materials sectors. The Centre also offers analytical and testing services, as well as an engineering workshop and conferencing facilities.

Technology Transfer
Technium provides access to a team of Welsh Assembly Government Innovation Managers who assist Technium companies in identifying suitable support for technology transfer.

Advice and Assistance
Technium draws upon a range of general and specialist business support available through the Welsh Assembly Government’s ‘Flexible Support for Business’ scheme (www.business-support-wales.gov.uk). Technium also works closely with over 30 professional service providers who offer free initial advice to Technium’s resident and associate member companies. These advisers cover disciplines such as accountancy, finance, management and marketing, sales, Intellectual Property, legal advice and human resources.

Site Management Arrangements
Technium companies are offered a variety of benefits, including access to technical laboratories and equipment, commercial broadband access, access to the Technium telephone network, a front-of-house reception service, use of meeting and conference rooms, communal kitchen areas, photocopying/facsimile services, buffet ordering service and car parking.

Facilities management covers services such as external building cleaning, janitorial services, heating, 24 hour security/alarm system, 24 hour help desk, internal decoration and presentation, lift maintenance, fire prevention, pest control and planting, and telecoms metering.

University/HEI Facilities
Technium works in partnership with higher and further education institutions across Wales. Many of the companies housed in a Technium will have, or will develop, fruitful links with key University departments.

User Clause
Guidelines for Technium’s eligibility criteria are provided below:
  • innovative, high-growth potential businesses
  • based in science or technology-led sectors
  • are exploiting Intellectual Property
  • are engaged in Research & Development
  • have or would benefit from links with higher or further education institutions
  • have a capable management team in place
  • sustainable financial status
  • possess a credible business plan.
