Introduction
The two Aberdeen Science Parks – the Science and Technology Park (ASTP) and the Science and Energy Park (ASEP) – have enjoyed an international reputation as centres of technological excellence and innovation since they were first established by Scotland’s national economic development agency in 1989.

Through the Energetica project, the objective of Scottish Enterprise and other public and private stakeholders is to reinforce the position of Aberdeen City Region as a global hub for the development of all-energy technologies. Energetica will promote a technology corridor stretching the thirty miles from the Bridge of Don to Peterhead. Aberdeen Science Parks are well placed to benefit from the impetus for investment and development generated by Energetica. The City Region also has a research excellence in life and environmental sciences and human health and nutrition. The Aberdeen Science Parks play a central role in this by providing a unique environment for technology research, design and development to thrive. They offer a dynamic business environment, prime office and research and development facilities with a prestigious address, good transport connections and a culture of collaboration and networking among the 100-plus operating companies. There are now in excess of 800 technology-based companies in Aberdeen alone; the growth of these high technology industries has helped Aberdeen to be recognised as the UK’s most competitive city after London and one of the three best knowledge-based locations in the UK. The area is consistently awarded one of the highest quality of life ratings in the UK.

Position
Aberdeen Science and Technology Park is situated in 60 acres of parkland five miles from the city centre and close to the University of Aberdeen and Aberdeen Airport. Aberdeen Science and Energy Park is situated nearby, on a 72 acre site adjacent to the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre.

Development
Substantial development is proposed over the next five to eight years, particularly at the Aberdeen Science and Energy Park where 42 acres has been added to the portfolio.

It is anticipated that a joint venture with a private sector investor/ developer will be established during 2010, to take forward the development of the Aberdeen Science Parks at a pace to meet industry demand for R&D accommodation.

Premises
Both the Aberdeen Science and Technology Park and the Aberdeen Science and Energy Park comprise a mix of bespoke single occupancy buildings and multi-occupied facilities.

The Aberdeen Science and Technology Park is made up of three interlinked campuses. Multi-occupancy buildings include:
  • The James Gregory Centre: operated as an incubator facility for small growing companies engaged in R&D.
  • Balgownie Technology Centre: an original estate mansion house with a contemporary extension providing research, laboratory and office facilities ranging from 16 square metres (176 square feet) to 139 square metres (1,500 square feet).
  • Kettock Lodge: a two-storey building which offers approximately 2,323 square metres (25,000 square feet) of office and laboratory facilities. The first floor operates as a purpose-built biotechnology centre.
  • Davidson House: modern office accommodation dedicated to technology research, design and development.
Between them, the multi-occupancy buildings on ASTP offer fully flexible accommodation for companies of all sizes and stages of commercial development.

Multi-occupancy buildings on the Aberdeen Science and Energy Park include:
  • The Innovation Centre: incorporates office suites of up to 63 square metres (680 square feet).
  • The Enterprise Centre: office suites ranging in size from 44 square metres (470 square feet) to 238 square metres (2,560 square feet).
  • The Technology Centre: space has been designed to be flexible to meet the needs of clients.
  • The Energy Development Centre: this multi-occupancy development provides office and R&D space for growing knowledge based businesses in the size range 144 square metres (1,550 square feet) to 322 square metres (3,466 square feet). This project has been awarded a BREEAM rating of ‘very good’. A district heating system to supply heating and hot water from a biomass boiler and wind turbine contributes to the sustainability of the development.
  • All the multi-occupancy facilities on ASEP provide fully serviced premises and flexible leases. Both parks boast a state-of-the-art communications infrastructure and serviced development land is available on a long lease basis for bespoke developments.

    Support for Business Growth
Companies based on the Parks benefit from a range of support services provided by Scottish Enterprise and its international trade and investment division Scottish Development International. Tenants can access a programme of business development support tailored to their needs by a dedicated Scottish Enterprise account manager, year-round networking opportunities and valuable market intelligence.

    University/HEI
The Aberdeen Science Parks have a close working relationship with Aberdeen’s higher education and research institutions, including the University of Aberdeen and The Robert Gordon University. Companies also have direct access to the Aberdeen Research Consortium which includes internationally recognised research organisations such as the Macaulay Land Use Research Institute and the Rowett Institute.

    Companies
The Aberdeen Science Parks accommodate over 100 companies and approximately 2,000 high-value jobs. The strategic growth plan for the Parks aims to double the number of jobs they support by 2015.
