Artist’s impression of new buildings Stevenage Bioscience Catalyst is an independent biosciences facility where early stage or maturing life sciences companies can benefit from proximity to the expertise and capabilities associated with a large pharmaceutical company. The joint involvement of the Wellcome Trust in this venture is designed to provide small biotech companies with the opportunity to gain additional insights into a spectrum of translational research and development activities and opportunities.

By fostering this distinct culture of open innovation, Stevenage Bioscience Catalyst aims to create an environment that will accelerate the pace of discovery towards product development and place the UK bioscience sector at the forefront of worldwide biomedical innovation and deliver cutting-edge healthcare solutions.

Stevenage Bioscience Catalyst is a joint venture between the Department for Business Innovation and Skills, GlaxoSmithKline, theWellcome Trust, the East of England Development Agency and the Technology Strategy Board.

With long term-plans to expand the campus by fivefold, Stevenage Bioscience Catalyst will offer access to a range of equipment that would be impossible for a small or medium-sized company to develop alone.

The lay-out of the campus has been designed to encourage cooperation, scientific and commercial dialogue and interaction amongst tenant companies and also with scientists on the GSK R&D site. However, tenants retain full independence and the freedom to interact with any commercial or academic partners.

Facilities will include:

The Bio-Incubator
Artist’s impression of new buildings Ideally suited to start-up biotech companies, this 4,750 square metre building is split between office space (40 per cent) and laboratories (60 per cent). Labs will be fitted with a full range of laboratory equipment.

The Accelerator Building
Small companies that begin in the bio-incubator (or indeed other bio-incubators around the UK) will need room to grow as they develop. This is the role of the accelerator building. Providing 4,100 square metres of working space for up to 150 people, the building is split between laboratories (60 per cent) and office space (40 per cent).

The Hub
A 250 square metre meeting and conference facility offers space that is crucial to facilitate open innovation. Any of the occupants of the first two buildings can use the meeting room space on a flexible charge-out basis.

Stevenage Bioscience Catalyst is ideally placed in the south east of England amid a cluster of academic centres of excellence and pharmaceutical companies. Stevenage boasts direct transport links with Cambridge and London. The campus is located close to junction 7 of the A1 (M) and has fast rail connections with Kings Cross in London and, via Eurostar services, with continental Europe. Two international airports (Luton and Stansted) are nearby.

The Stevenage Bioscience Catalyst team is now open for business, welcoming discussions with all interested parties with a view to taking up tenancy from Qtr1 2012.
