The Institute of Science and Technology (IST) is a recognised professional body for specialist, technical and managerial people who work in a wide range of environments such as science, arts, engineering, industry, local authorities, schools, FE, HE, research/ analytical/health facilities, government departments and many more in the UK and also overseas. Historically, its roots and past traditions lay in the formation of The Science Technology Association in 1948, created for the promotion and practice of science and laboratory technology and the recognition and professional standing of its members. Subsequently granted a certificate of incorporation in 1954, it became the Institute of Science Technology and in 2007 the Institute of Science and Technology.

The IST has continued to move forward and to expand its own horizons so that it can best position itself to support its members and their needs in the 21st century. Science and technology continually moves forward and has opened up many new and exciting fields, where increasingly a multi-disciplined approach towards developing new and innovative solutions is helping change the face of industry, research and education.

One of the IST's key aims is to embrace this change through making the Institute fully inclusive. In order to achieve this, help/advice networks, skills training programmes, specialist forums, recognised qualifications and courses, continuing career development programmes, mentoring and guidance are made easily available to its members and special interest groups.

High on the IST's agenda is the promotion of a wider understanding and recognition of the professional standing of its members and, importantly, so is the continued expansion of its vibrant community of specialist, technical and managerial colleagues who will work together to help make a difference and shape the future.
