Key Developments for 2016

Space TEC Incubation

In Spring 2016, the Innovation Park became one of six new sites offering business incubation to start-ups in the Space Sector in partnership with the UK Space Agency. The programme focusses on supporting the creation and growth of downstream Satellite applications.

The Technology Entrepreneurship Centre

Developed as part of the University Enterprise Zone, the Technology Entrepreneurship Centre (TEC) will open in September 2016. The TEC will provide a range of small, medium and larger offices within a 2000m2 three-storey building and will include meeting, seminar and innovation space together with social space and a café. The building will host up to 35 technology-driven start-ups linking to existing research activities on the Innovation Park. The TEC will also be home to anchor tenants supporting student and alumni businesses (Haydn Green Institute), academic spin-outs (University of Nottingham IPCO), and local entrepreneurs (UNIP).

The GlaxoSmithKline Carbon Neutral Laboratory for Sustainable Chemistry

GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), one of the world’s leading research-based pharmaceutical and healthcare companies, and the University of Nottingham have formalised a collaboration to establish a new laboratory to accommodate a Centre of Excellence for sustainable chemistry. This involves the construction of an innovative carbon neutral sustainable chemistry laboratory, supported by a £12m grant from GSK. The initiative will focus on research that is of particular relevance to the pharmaceutical industry, complementing established expertise at the University.

This type of engagement between business and research underpins what UNIP offers to our tenants, providing direct access to the University’s world-class talent and resources. It will be an exemplar for our vision of UNIP as a uniquely creative environment where business and research can work together, sharing knowledge and ideas and sparking innovation.

The University of Nottingham

The University of Nottingham has 43,000 students and is ‘the nearest Britain has to a truly global university, with campuses in China and Malaysia modelled on a headquarters that is among the most attractive in Britain’ (Times Good University Guide 2014). It is also one of the most popular universities in the UK among graduate employers, in the top 10 for student experience according to the Times Higher Education and winner of ‘Research Project of the Year’ at the THE Awards 2014. It is ranked in the world’s top one per cent of universities by the QS World University Rankings, and 8th in the UK by research power according to REF 2014.

New Buildings for 2017

During 2016 two new buildings are being developed on the wider innovation campus within which UNIP sits:

Advanced Manufacturing Building

Developed to house University of Nottingham research in Advanced Manufacturing this 9,000m2 building represents a £24m investment scheduled to reach fruition in late 2017.

Research Acceleration and Demonstration Building

As part of recent Government investment in the Midlands Innovation Energy Research Accelerator (ERA) project, a 2,500m2 building is being developed at a cost of £7m. This will support a high profile research collaboration between multiple private sector manufacturing partners and universities’ research including Nottingham’s Energy Technology Building.

The construction of the Advanced Manufacturing Building on Jubilee Campus will connect the campus to Derby road and the adjacent Gatehouse Lodge. The building comprises office space, laboratories and seminar space for the Faculty of Engineering.

The architect is Bond Bryan, with Arup acting as structural and services engineer. Turner & Townsend are project manager and Sweett Group are the cost managers.
