A Centre of Excellence for Technology Growth
Scottish Enterprise Technology Park (SETP) provides a dynamic environment for all types of Technology and professional companies, whether start-ups, global leaders or indigenous investors. The Park is a self-contained high quality technology campus, strategically positioned adjacent to East Kilbride town centre, with access to all major routes and public transport.
The Scottish Enterprise Technology Park (SETP), located in Scotland’s largest new town, East Kilbride, began life over 60 years ago as the National Engineering Laboratory (NEL), which undertook research and development work for both government and business. In 1994, the 34-hectare facility was acquired by Scottish Enterprise who remain responsible for the management and development of the Park. SETP continues to successfully meet and exceed the needs of growing technology companies. The Technology Park has successfully fulfilled its objectives, the underlying principles behind these objectives being to:
- Promote economic and business development
- Provide a flagship project for Scotland in niche markets
- Encourage and assist creation and growth for more technology-based companies
- Encourage expansion of existing growing companies at SETP
- Develop the Park’s reputation as a Centre of Technology excellence
- Maximise opportunities for technology transfer
- Ensure continuity and expansion of linkages with business development initiatives
Since Scottish Enterprise acquired the Park in 1994, it has seen a number of new developments of both multiple and single occupancy buildings. The Park has attracted a number of new small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) and Scottish Enterprise continues to support them in their growth, with the facilities the Park offers including flexible Lease Terms allowing easy migration within the Park.

Along with tenants benefiting from the facilities on the Park, they also have easy access to East Kilbride Town Centre, one of the biggest enclosed Shopping Centres in Scotland, which includes both a cinema and ice rink. There are also a number of leisure facilities in close proximity, including a fitness gym only 5 minutes’ walk from the Park.
The Park is promoted, developed and managed by Scottish Enterprise with the
operational management provided by, Colliers International who provide a dedicated and professional management team overseeing all aspects of building and park operations, based on the Park.

The Technology Park has a range of multi-occupancy and stand-alone buildings which house approximately 72 Companies ranging from SMEs to large international companies working in the following sectors:

The NEL is a leading provider of independent consultancy, on-site measurement, accredited testing and calibration research and development, and training services to the global energy industry. As the holder of the UK’s National Standards for flow measurement, NEL are one of the foremost authorities on flow measurement technology in the world today.
Flow Measurement Support – meter selection, system audit, uncertainty studies, interpretation of standards
- Development and Calibration – single phase, wet gas and multiphase systems, valves and subsea equipment
- Erosion – assessment and validation
- Environmental – produced water, oil-in-water, emissions and Carbon Capture & Storage
- CFD Modelling – flow assurance, measurement and uncertainty, erosion modelling
Formerly a UK Government Laboratory, NEL has been part of the TÜV SÜD Group for some 15 years. TÜV SÜD is one of the world’s leading technical service providers of testing, product certification, auditing, systems certification, and training and knowledge services.
The Scottish Universities Environmental Research Centre
This is a cluster of collaborative high-technology research laboratories operated by the University of Glasgow. It is host to 4 national NERC facilities and attracts a wide range of visiting scientists – from post graduate students in associated universities to distinguished international senior scientists. There are five foci of research interest:
- Environmental geochemistry; waste disposal, pollution and health
- Quaternary process and dating
- Biomedical and ecological processes; stable isotope approaches
- Isotope Geology and geochronology
- Environmental radioactivity
Further expansion of their Accelerator Mass Spectrometer is proposed.
E. K. Engineering Services Ltd.
EKES’ Headquarters are located within SETP – EKES is a highly diversified company engaged in the design, development, recruitment and manufacture of high technology engineering projects.
EKES has recently announced that they have been acquired by Belcan, LLC (Belcan), a private engineering consultancy services and technical staffing solutions company. Belcan’s extensive experience in the industries EKES serve will be key in identifying ways to better serve their customers. Belcan shares the same business philosophy and core values for which EKES is well known. With Belcan, EKES will continue to deliver the same high performance, trusted engineering solutions that their customers have come to expect.
Heliex Power Ltd.
Heliex Power Ltd. is a spin out company from City University, London. Heliex has developed a range of steam screw expanders, which recover energy from waste or low grade steam and uses it to drive an alternator to generate electricity. The expander generator sets were launched in 2012 and are rated from 75 to 350 kilowatts.
Safeglass (Europe) Ltd
Safeglass has continued to grow on the Park since 1997 and an award winning Company in the innovation category of the Queen’s Award for Enterprise, presented for the commercial success of its safety product. This product was used for break-glass on public transport: a safety product which is made of a polymer material that mimics some of the properties of glass but does not cause injury when broken.
Safeglass has also expanded into 3D Print Works, which manufactures premium 3D printer filament for FDM 3D Printers. They have further developed new filaments for 3D printing, such as their Vanish water dissolvable material for supports.
Starting out in a small incubator unit on the Park in 1992, Gael is a specialist supplier of management software to handle compliance, safety, risk and performance. It grew to having 2500 customers including Emirates, Virgin Rail, UK NHS, G4S, Terex and Dairy Crest across the transport, manufacturing, life sciences, healthcare and energy Sectors and in 2014 it became part of Ideagen PLC.
Founded in 1994 and now an employee-owned business, Clansman design and develop robotic mechanical handling equipment. They provide supremely robust high-technology solutions for the toughest manufacturing environments in forges, foundries, steelworks and even waste management for energy conversion around the globe.
Energy Technology Centre
The Energy Technology Centre was launched in 2006, formerly part of the National Engineering Laboratory, ETC’s primary focus is on the development of energy conversion devices in the renewable and low carbon sector.
The Company's core skills and expertise are in mechanical, electrical and aeronautical engineering. Sectoral expertise is offered across a range of energy technologies including wind, marine, energy storage, biomass, fuel cells, hydrogen, low emission/alternative fuels for IC engines and low carbon vehicles.
With a range of engineering test assets, it supports the development and test requirements of a range of clients on mechanical, thermal and electrical applications. The Energy Technology Centre offers creative options for accessing its expertise and facilities from turnkey project execution and client access to test facilities under clear permissions and guidelines.
The Energy Technology Centre aims to showcase new technologies and transform research breakthroughs into marketable products, by offering:
- Cost-effective, flexible-access to specialist resources and infrastructure at a central Scottish location
- Access to specialist test and measurement equipment
- A safe, independent testing and demonstration environment
- Access to expertise and potential collaborative ventures through a network of advisers, suppliers and potential customers
- Signposting to further support and funding for development projects
Ecebs are an advanced technology company specialising in Smartcard Software Development and solutions. They provide products and services throughout the world. Formed in 2000 by a team of experienced smartcard industry professionals, Ecebs have created rapid development technology that can be deployed across an all-encompassing range of smartcard requirements. These include payment, ticketing, contactless systems, I.D., biometrics and healthcare.
Prism House is a newly acquired property to SE’s current portfolio. This building is a dynamic single-storey office development, providing flexible accommodation. Currently, the building is undergoing a complete internal refurbishment with the option for either FRI Leases or a range of serviced offices.
Technotots is a Tenant on the Park, operating as a privately owned Childrens’ Nursery School. The Nursery works in partnership with South Lanarkshire Council to provide care and education for pre-five children. The Nursery offers its services for children aged from 6 weeks to 5 years old. This facility is available to all Tenants on the Park and also to the wider community.
On-Site Park Facilities and Services
The Park benefits from a broad range of facilities including: a 24/7 security controlled and permanent manned security presence high amenity a landscaped environment with flexible accommodation, extending to - fully serviced office space; multi-occupancy units; Single-occupancy buildings; stand-alone buildings and potential development sites ranging from 0.83 acres up to 3.04 acres.
SETP offers free parking provision and a communal visitor and goods reception services.
The Technology Park’s existing conference facilities will shortly be relocated to Prism House under the current refurbishment scheme. These new facilities can accommodate up to a maximum of 70No. persons and will offer a high Tec audio and visual facility equipment facility. These facilities are available on a hire basis to all Companies located within the Park and to interest from outside of the Park.
Located by the Park’s main entrance is an on-Site Café, which is open to all Tenants on the Park.
SETP benefits from a modern Information and Communication Technology infrastructure with the majority of occupiers located on the Park having access to these services. We are currently installing a new high speed internet (Broadband) connectivity and hosted VOIP telephony service.
SETP has various multi-occupancy office/research buildings with fully serviced units ranging from 14sq.m. (150sq.ft.) to 465sq.m (5,000sq.ft.), all offering flexible Lease Terms. The multi-occupancy buildings owned by Scottish Enterprise are the James Watt Building (planned demolition and major redevelopment earmarked for this particular building and Site), the Nasmyth Building and the Brunel Building. In addition, the Technology Centre which is privately owned is a modern multi-occupancy building with available space from 650sq.ft. These buildings benefit from an innovative structured cabling system, with each unit cabled individually to provide networking capabilities on a unit by unit basis as well as having the advantage of multiple units being linked together to provide a larger virtual network.
The Torus Building is a further multi-occupied sustainable development, which was complete late 2006. The building has been given a BREEAM rating of ‘very good’ and benefits from a wind turbine which supplies power for the common parts of the building. The development secured a pre-let to existing tenant of the Park, Ecebs Limited and Hydro Contracting Limited, now occupying over 4,000 square feet.
More recent developments on the Park, consists of two buildings - Pegasus and Orion Building, of multi-occupied sustainable offices. These two buildings have been extremely successful in Letting and the Orion Building has recently passed into new ownership.
The Park has benefited from a healthy level of demand over recent years which highlighted the need for further developments. With the Park continuing to grow, the Management Team are already looking at the next development and are continually working on increasing the number of companies that are attracted to the Park each year.
The main aim for the future of SETP is to ensure it meets its full potential as an asset for Scotland, in relation to the growth and prosperity of the existing companies and to continue to attract new and expanding companies to the Technology Park. All of the services, facilities and assistance available to encourage growth, combined with the Park’s high levels of leading edge research and development, make this one of Scotland’s leading Science and Technology Parks.
