Blake Morgan LLP

Blake Morgan LLP

Blake Morgan LLP is a large full-service commercial law firm with offices in Cardiff, London, Oxford, Portsmouth, Reading and Southampton in the United Kingdom. It was formed in 2014 following a merger between the Cardiff-based Morgan Cole and the Portsmouth-based Blake Lapthorn.

We act for large corporates, SMEs, entrepreneurs, public sector and charitable organisations. With a long heritage and committed and valued client base, the firm’s 120 partners and over 900 employees provide pragmatic and commercially sound advice.

Science and innovation is one of the main pillars of the Government's industrial strategy and vision for the United Kingdom post-Brexit.  With our considerable expertise in the science and technology sector having acted on various science and innovation projects over the last 25 years both for science park operators, universities, colleges and their occupiers, Blake Morgan is well equipped to support UKSPA members in offering strategic estates planning advice, development and estates management support.

Our science and technology experience and contributions to the sector

We have a long history of acting in connection with not less than 3 science parks located in Oxfordshire, with our Oxford and Reading offices located within close proximity of Science Vale.   The Government's Industrial Strategy White Paper, "Industrial Strategy: Building a Britain fit for the future", describes the Cambridge-Milton Keynes-Oxford corridor as having "the potential to be the UK's Silicon Valley".    Science and technology is very much at the heart of the region's economic output and that is reflected in our experience and expertise.

What sets us apart from other law firms is our significant public and private sector experience, having engaged with various central Government stakeholders over the years to support the delivery of ambitious partnerships and developments.   We understand political drivers and the need for early engagement to "trouble-shoot" any potential blockers to project delivery.

As a full service firm, Blake Morgan also acts for a number of science and technology companies providing services.  We have a rich heritage of supporting new and emerging technologies from IT security, big data, artificial intelligence (AI) and autonomous vehicles; we have worked with companies from start-up through growth and acquisition to listing on AIM. We have the expertise and scale to provide informed, proactive advice to help businesses to thrive in this dynamic sector which can support the growth and development of occupiers of UKSPA's members.

Key aspects of our legal work include:

  • ·         IP protection and commercialisation through licensing.
  • ·         Support for customer and supplier arrangements.
  • ·         Legal advice on the provision of "big-data" analysis services.
  • ·         Managing an online environment and marketing.
  • ·         Brand protection and licensing.
  • ·         Data protection and GDPR compliant policies and procedures.
  • ·         Employment services, including director service contracts and employment contracts, policies and procedures.
  • ·         Acquisition and disposal of IP rights, including University spin-out projects.
  • ·         All forms of corporate activity ranging from mergers, acquisitions and disposals to raising funds through venture capital, debt and IPOs.

We have significant joint venture experience which we can harness to support UKSPA members to identify new and innovative partnership models to secure investment, capital receipts and occupiers.

We are fully committed as a firm to continue to engage with the science and technology sector.  We are proud to be sponsoring the Thames Valley Tech Awards this year. The first TVTA will be staged by The Business Magazine on May 24, 2018, and will be a major focal point for the sector. Technology has been a significant part of the region’s economy for some 20 years or more – and the M4 corridor is home to key international tech companies such as Microsoft, Oracle, CA Technologies, Fujitsu, Huawei and Cisco.
