The 3M Buckley Innovation Centre (3M BIC) is a wholly owned subsidiary of the University of Huddersfield. It is a state-of-the-art building offering a one-stop shop for businesses that want to experience dynamic growth through its bespoke, innovation-led business model.
The 3M BIC promotes business growth and open innovation, and facilitates business-to-academia collaboration. Technical, professional, academic, and business support go hand in hand. SMEs get a foot in the door to the Centre’s own capabilities, as well as its main partners the University of Huddersfield and NPL North of England, and associated businesses, tenants, and network members.
Unique Selling Points
Businesses can access the latest technology for advanced manufacturing and engineering projects, as well as technical and commercial support. The 3M BIC also acts as a gateway to the University of Huddersfield’s research centres and opens doors to national and international markets.
Non-tenant businesses can become part of the 3M BIC’s ethos through its network membership. With three levels available, companies of all sizes can join a wider B2B support network. Other benefits include: opportunities to market their services to SMEs; collaborative opportunities with the University of Huddersfield (subject to certain criteria); access to specialist events; hot desking facilities and access to state-of-the-art technology.
Launched in 2016, the Business Engagement Centre is a unique partnership between the 3M BIC, the University of Huddersfield, and NPL North of England, providing a one-stop shop for commercial support for organisations in the greater Leeds City Region. The dedicated area within the 3M BIC provides a single point of access for the University of Huddersfield, giving businesses access to its schools, benefiting from R&D support, KTP and student placement opportunities.
Technical support can be accessed via the technology team at the 3M BIC and the University of Huddersfield, as well as the metrology expertise of NPL North of England offering bespoke measurement training and consultancy. Businesses can tap into the capabilities of specialists and professionals from the3M BIC’s growing network membership, helping facilitate business to business and business to professional collaborations.
The 3M BIC also houses the Duke of York Young Entrepreneur Centre (DOYYEC), a business hub for University of Huddersfield students and graduates embarking on starting a business. The DOYYEC provides office space, meeting facilities, networking opportunities, and support and mentoring.
Facilities and Services
The Centre’s flexible working space can accommodate businesses from start-ups to large corporates from a variety of sectors, giving them the breathing space to grow and evolve. Tenancy includes business rates, meeting and conferencing facilities, and a dedicated management team for support. Accommodation includes workshops with bookable facilities, corporate lab space, multimedia exhibition space, 26 SME offices, large SME open-plan offices, and three SME laboratories.
The 3M BIC boasts a wide range of meeting and conference spaces, suitable for all types of events, kitted out with the latest audio-visual technology:
• The Atrium – ideal for informal presentations and networking events
• Exhibition Space – perfect for events with up to 100 delegates
• Meeting rooms – ideal for team meetings for up to 18 people
• Board Room – perfect for a more formal meeting, with three monitors for multiple displays
• The Room - ideal for brainstorming and smaller meetings or presentations.
Innovation Avenue is at the heart of the 3M BIC. Businesses can explore the technologies and expertise available at the Centre and the University of Huddersfield to develop innovative products and services. It is both a shop window on the future and an inspirational place to bring ideas.

• Surface examination, characterisation and measurement

• NPL North of England – precision measurement
• University of Huddersfield lab services, including surface metrology and advanced manufacturing.
It also facilitates access to the University of Huddersfield, which boasts seven institutes and 30 specialist centres covering a diverse range of research topics. These include the Institute of Rail Research, the Turbocharger Research Institute, and the International Institute for Accelerator Applications, the Institute of Skin Integrity and Infection Prevention, and the Secure Societies Institute.
The 3M Buckley Innovation Centre is part of the wider Leeds City Region.
